Just read the very sad news that Ian St John has died. The club announced it this morning, he was 82. RIP. YNWA.

Liverpool FC deeply saddened by Ian St John passing.

Liverpool Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Reds legend Ian St John, aged 82.

The former forward made 425 appearances for the club over the course of a hugely successful decade between 1961 and 1971, scoring 118 goals.

Under the management of Bill Shankly, St John was the scorer of one of the most iconic goals in Liverpool’s history when he netted in extra time to secure our first ever FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Leeds United in 1965.

League title wins were achieved either side in 1964 and 1966, while the Scot had earlier helped the Reds into the First Division by gaining promotion in his first season following his transfer for a then club-record fee of £37,500 from Motherwell.

St John sadly passed away on Monday evening following illness.

Ian’s family have released the following statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that after a long illness we have lost a husband, father and grandfather.

“He passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside.

“We would like to thank all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital for their hard work and dedication during these very difficult times.

“The family would be grateful for privacy at this extremely sad time.”

The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Ian’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.

Yeats and Ian St John signing in 1961 was the turning point for Liverpool FC.  They all played their part in probably why we're all here talking about the club.

Don't think he's been very well on and off for a while.  Rest in peace Saint!

Terrible news a true legend RIP Saint.

My dad's hero. My hero's hero.

My dad used to always tell me about the header when he sort of jumped backwards and headed the ball in (FA Cup Final, maybe?).


When you see the Liverpool FC documentaries and see him talking, there's not a person I've ever seen that looks back on their playing days as fondly as Sainty. You can see the pride in his eyes and also the sadness that those days had gone.

Seen him a few years ago coming out of a place where he had just had a pedicure over here on Wirral where he lived 🙂

My dads all time hero ,he is devastated as we all are.Was only watching him on LFCTV a few weeks ago talking about our great club and he really was getting quite emotional,so yeah WAHS post was bang on.

Another sad day for our club & Family, Ian St John a true Liverpool Legend, too young to have seen him live but like most have seen plenty of footage of his playing days, Shanks loved him, he said he along with Ron Yates was the turning point which allowed Liverpool to build on the success we all adore today,

His battles with Leeds are legendary, getting sent off for fighting fellow Scot Billy Bremner, I think Saint chinned him first, would loved to have seen them two in a boxing ring, Saint wasn’t to be messed with as you may imagine, his fiery temper hailed from his up bringing in Motherwell and with it the steel in which the town is famous for, they don’t make them like Saint anymore, hard as nails but as fair and honest as they come, and why Shanks loved him so much,

The documentary of Liverpool winning the cup for the first time in 1965, watch it again, and look out for the sparkle in Saints eyes, and later when he and his mate Ron Yates relived the moment of presenting the cup on the balcony of St George’s hall, bursting with pride,

Very sad to hear of the passing of a real Liverpool legend. Well remember him scoring the winner for our first F.A. cup at Wembley from a cross by Cally. A great man, who loved Liverpool F.C. Rest in peace, Ian.

RIP, always came across as a really classy guy, top footballer as well.

I was one year old when St John lay horizontally in the air, for what seemed like seconds and bullet headed the winner at Wembley against Leeds in extra time to give us that first FA Cup win and send the red half of Merseyside into a state of Ecstasy, from which we have never recovered 

Here we are 56 years later and watching that same goal still sends shivers down my spine (even better in colour)

A lovely man and a fantastic ambassador for the club, he will be sadly missed...

Just watched a lovely tribute about him on the news, lovely lovely man, met him quite a few times over the years and he was always such a gentleman on and off the pitch.

Condolences to his family at this sad time, been quite poorly for a few years unfortunately, but he'll always be well remembered as a real true Liverpool legend and hero.

Watched in awe as a kid when he went horizontal to head the winner in the '65 Cup Final.

Saint and Greavsey was my favourite program on a Saturday morning when I was a kid, only really found our about his playing career when I was older. What a legend.

Loved the saint, old connection between my wee club motherwell and LFC.

What a player and what a man, sad times. :-(

As Shankly said 'he liked a scrap, he did like a scrap'.

Like most of us here, I was not around when he played for us, but he got over 100 club goals, an achievement that generally doesn't get the credit it deserves compared to what other forwards have scored for us over the years.

I was around for the last year of his TV show. He carried the whole show really, and always kept it together when Greaves interrupted him mid sentence, which was often.

But he was an emotional character, and he struggled to fight back the tears as a pundit on Sky, when the team and club disintegrated before his eyes during Rafa's last season. The fans let everyone there know that it was 50 years since Shanks first game in charge. Just as that day though, we lost the game.

More recently, he was co commentator on our station for the home game v Wolves two seasons ago. With his faltering and barely audible voice, clearly he wasn't in great health at the time, but he was brave enough to do it, when more regular pundits in better health should have, and for whatever reason didn't bother. But there's only one word to describe him really. Legend.

Scouser is touring America on holiday and stops in a remote bar in the hills of Nevada. He's chatting to the barman when he spies an old Native American sitting in a corner.
"Who's he?" asks the Scouser.
"That's the Memory Man," says the barman.
"He knows everything. He can remember any fact. Go and try him out."
So the Scouser wanders over and asks: "Who won the 1965 FA Cup Final?"
"Liverpool," replies the Memory Man.
The tourist is amazed.
"Who did they beat?"
"Leeds," comes the reply.
"And the score?"
"2-1."
Scouser tries something more specific.
"Who scored the winning goal?"
Native American does not even blink:
"Ian St John."
The Liverpudlian returns home and regales his relatives and friends with his tale, and he's determined to return and pay his respects to this amazing man.
Ten years later he has saved enough money and returns to America. After weeks of searching through the towns of Nevada, Scouser finds the Memory Man in a cave in the mountains.
The Scouser steps forward, bows and greets the Native American in what he imagines from old films to be his traditional native tongue:
"How."
The Memory Man squints at him and says:
"Diving header in the six-yard box."
