We lost the title in 1989 on goals scored. If we win a game 1-0, and our rivals win 4-0 on the same weekend, both have the 3 points, but they have a 3 goal swing in their favour. Last season, we had a 4 goal cushion over Leicester going into the final day of the season, so all we had to do was win our game to be in the top 4. In a tight race, things like that make a big difference.

If United or City does a 5-1, we will need to do a 6-0 to outdo them. It’s not enough just to win, we must outdo our rivals in every aspect.

5-0 can sit back and watch in peace and look forward to reading the headline - Another 5 Star performance from The Reds!

That should have been the headline at the weekend. At least we got to sit back and watch it in peace. Well some of it anyway.

So the last two home games were both won. But what do people prefer? The 9-0 record scoreline v Bournemouth, with total domination, goals at regular intervals, fabulous entertainment for the crowd, and winning the easy way. Or the latest last minute winner at home v Newcastle, for the drama of it and the mentality monsters to prevail after 97 minutes of frustration?

Personally, I thought the Newcastle game was a horrible game to watch, where we created little and they time wasted at every opportunity. The ending was great of course on the night, but I preferred the Bournemouth game, where we could enjoy the game knowing it was won early, and everyone at it saw lots of goals for us, and full value for money.
