I forgot about this rumour a few years ago.
Real Madrid to offer £40m for gomez…

Some of the comments are funny looking back.
“He would be mad going there.”
      “He is our future.”

Goes to show how quickly things can change for a player.

Meh. I'll drive him to wherever he wants to go. And that's saying something, as I live in VA (USA)

I don't mind if he stays as a 4th or 5th CB. Jürgen will decide what to do with the first 3 (VVD, Matip, Konate), but on a reduced role i think Gomez is worth keeping. Only 25 so best years ahead of him to rebound from this season (where basically everyone has had a poor year, not just him), probably not on big wages and checks the homegrown box.

I don’t mind keeping him but he has been poor for a while now.

He's having a poor season but I'd keep him. He's got talent and pace and is a decent back up option. Hopefully his form will pick up (probably will sooner or later).

He is also a decent RB (probably better there than at CB right now) so does give us cover there too.

Play him RB for a few games.

Trent can't just keep getting picked regardless on current form.

A quality defender that can play in 2 positions is literally as rare as a precious diamond in football right now.

But he struggles to concentrate at CB and uses his pace to recover, also needs Virg to guide him AND can't attack when he plays RB.

Is this what we want? A jack of trades or would we just prefer a couple of masters?

Having 2 world class players in every position is unrealistic IMO. It can lead to problems in the squad when players get annoyed that they are sitting on the bench and we obviously can't afford the transfer fees and wages.

We all want a very good starting 11 with some world class options of the bench. Some "jack of trades" players are necessary to fill the squad and give cover of the bench. Milner, maybe Jota and Elliot are other examples. All top clubs have always had 1 or 2 of these players.

Unfortunately it looks like Gomez is never going to be a world class starting CB or RB and we probably don't want to depend on him playing a full season in the starting 11. He had potential  to develop into world class a few years ago but the injuries have probably killed that. He's ok to fill in for some games and sit on the bench. He's also home grown which is a bonus.

Being homegrown is now a significant and possibly key feature in discussions about him. I haven't really been too critical of Joe (even though he has been sh*te  :)) because we have bigger issues elsewhere. We also need a CB regardless of whether he stays.

He is a superb CB and also a very good right back defensively

He is a key member of the squad for a number of reasons including the home grown rule

He's having a bad season, but i would not write him off. He was excellent for us before this season, i'm not going to just say he's completely useless now. I'm sorry.

Also, according to this thread, it's something REAL MADRID want.

So who's judgement of a player am i going to trust? Jürgen Klopp, Real Madrid...or some ppl in a forum.

I don’t see how anyone can say he is a superb CB now. He was a superb CB for a few months in 18-19 before he broke his leg at Burnley but since then he’s been a shadow of his former self. So many lapses of concentration in his game right now.

I suspect he will stay as he is homegrown but if he wasn’t he’d 100% have been sold this coming summer IMO.

Even at his best he's always had issues judging high lofted balls and is usually a metre short every time. At one time he could use his pace to recover but those days are gone.

Both were supremely gifted players that were rarely injured before they joined their new clubs.

Not far off before the injuries, but sadly a shell of that player now.
