Thought Konaté was excellent again, apart from a couple of misplaced passes in the first half.

The defense actually held out pretty well apart from the two crosses which Trent and Robertson didn't do well on. For all their control in the first half Villarreal only got 2 shots on target and 5 shots total all game.

Diaz from the start or impact sub. Is there any psychology invovled if he starts and makes no impact in say the first 30 or so. If we lose momentum or whatever. Having an immediate impact, does wonders for the confidence. It also spooks defenders.

That little bit of extra zip makes a huge difference. But from the off you can go a bit stale, a bit less inclined to have an impact. Defenders have time to size you up, get in a biting tackle. With Diaz being unpredictable in that he picks and chooses when to take a defender on or make a run. Added advantage to that is he knows when to lay it off and doesn't lose possession easily.

He is quick off a standing start, which showed last night in that he got to the Trent cross even tho he was in the pack. On first sight he looked off but on replay his speed off the mark nailed it. He's done that a couple of times already this season.

But does that make him the perfect impact sub..?

      This team is amazing.
I think the first half was just to keep tradition of never doing things the easy way.

We do have this habit of doing things. Even in earlier CL matches... It is still valid.

This is how Jürgen closed his press conference last night. This is why the man is so special.

I am old enough  :( to remember our wonderful times dominating Europe in the distant past and during those times, my beloved Liverpool FC were a brilliant team.
Although I can no longer go to matches my support from the armchair hasn't diminished! (Nor has my shouting at players/officials/managers and anyone else). This team of ours have given me so much happiness in the last few seasons, my wonderful club back at the top of the pile where they should always be.

Last night though I confess to having a bit of a hissy  during the first half! I was sat wondering who were the clones in red whose faces looked exactly like they should do but their passing (or lack of it) and decision making was definitely not the team I have become used to seeing.

Like many I was calling for Hendo cos despite Naby Lad's recent run of form I thought he was terrible and Thiago's normal slick through the eye of a needle passes had obviously not been put in the suitcase by the kit man.  These two were not the only ones, Virg usually unflappable was not at his imperious best, and Robbo and Trent didn't cover themselves in glory either! In fact the whole 11 appeared to have been hypnotised into forgetting how to play their beautiful high pressing in opponents face  football.
That said hats off to Villareal who gave their loyal followers something to shout about and kept the mighty Reds quiet in that first half.

But in Jürgen  ;D we trust and his question 'Why are you not playing the football you have played all season' must have struck home! A perfect 45 minutes and the dazzling Diaz's introduction once again gave new life to the Liver Bird!
He simply has to be the best signing of the season on the planet!

Time again to bring Big Ears home - this bird is deffo back on her perch! :D

I think it is probably best if we just all forget about the first half.

I missed the game last night due to working but managed to watch the game highlights this morning. I'd just like to clear something up.

I noticed that during the first half the pitch was absolutely soaking wet to the point where it was killing the flow and speed of the ball and the ball was spraying water everywhere.

Was there a storm before the game or did Villareal deliberately over water the pitch to disrupt us?

Just asking, not sure if this has been brought up or not.

      Thanks in advance.

Heavy rains. Nothing to do with their dirty tactics, in this case.
If anything, it seems their ground staff did an amazing job to ensure the pitch was even playable.

It absolutely lashed it down for most of the day in eastern Spain yesterday so much so  the pitch resembled a paddy field
But obviously the officials deemed it playable.

I did think for a second 'F**k me'. But thats all it was, as I fully believed we would come out in the 2nd half and get the job done. Such is this team and this management we have in place.

Another similar example of this is my missus noticed me not being as noisy when we score during games now. I guess it's just we're that good now I fully expect us to go out and get the win every time.

And long may that F***ing feeling last.

I was so pissed with that performance by everyone, we were like rabbits in the headlights, all my years, the only time I saw this was Arsenal at Anfield, and First half against AC Milan. Play that way against Chealsea or City, we will get twatted

City screwed again. Real into the final. Revenge on the horizon. Slightly better keeper this time. On Sunday 22 we play Wolves at Anfield so the Kop can send the team on to Paris with YNWA ringing in their ears.
