It depends on what people are using as the narrative at a point in time.

For a while it was Van Dijk. Then when we were decimated at defense and we moved Fabinho to CB, he was the most important player.

When people were saying to give Salah whatever he wanted, he was the most important player then.

This year naturally the most important player will be someone in the middle.
