Is it the international team motivation or is it the position?

The thing is the standard whether people like it or not is lower in these tournaments.

That first goal yesterday the defender probably reads where he's going and if not the keeper probably saves it.

Quite a low standard at times in the Euros up to the last 8. World Cup can be the same.

He's played on the left for us before.

Lets be honest, a couple bad performances and everyone gonna start saying he's sh*t and we should sell.

      Pretty much.

All well and dandy now being encouraged by his performances in the Euros but soon as he puts on the red shirt, like the other 10 lads, the mindsets of the fans change and the moment he goes through that purle patch (& he will) it'll be the same old bollocks.

Almost become an obligatory habit that we get on the players back and argue with each other they're no good and need to be sold.

If you can't support your own player thru a minor purple patch then whats the point of being a fan? It seems like nowadays fans just want to get excited about making new signings. Its like we're playing fifa / fantasy football IRL.

We've seen this play out so many times before

I'm glad he's playing well, but I just know it all means nothing in the minds of many once the season starts.

All its gonna take is Jamie Carragher or Roy Keane to make a dumb comment and the pile on will start.

Yeah, I've seen so much hype over Gakpo but it's not like the lad has suddenly had some type of accelerated evolution or anything, and the NL team hasn't faced any decent opposition apart from France (where he did jack sh*t).

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, and hope he does well for us - but so far, Euro or not, I don't think either him or Diaz are good enough to start on the left for us consistently.

      Satisfied by what :D

I guess I'm still living in the land of Sadio Mane, but 10-12 G+A per season from a starting eleven Liverpool left winger? You're absolutely right I'm not satisfied. Just look at the output of some other top wingers in the league.

Believe it or not, you can simultaneously wish the best for our current players while thinking they're not up to Liverpool standard. I would love for Gakpo to suddenly blow up next season - but I'm far from betting on it. I'd still be starting him over Diaz though, no doubt.

Just look at the output of some other top wingers in the league.

      Well let's run through them.

      Doku - 3 goals 9 assists
      Grealish - 3 goals 1 assist
      Martinelli - 6 goals 4 assists
      Trossard - 12 goals 1 assist
      Diaz - 8 goals 5 assists
      Gakpo - 8 goals 5 assists
      Diaby - 6 goals 8 assists
      Son - 17 goals 10 assists
      Mudryk - 5 goals 2 assists
      Barnes - 5 goals 3 assists
      Gordon - 11 goals 10 assists
      Rashford - 7 goals 2 assists
      Garnacho - 7 goals 4 assists
      Anthony - 1 goal 1 assist
      Kulusevski - 8 goals 3 assists

Even someone like Kudus who everyone is harping on about the next Rivaldo or something, 8 goals 6 assists. Neto is one we all love to watch because of how exciting he is, but go see what his goals/assists is like.

It's taken someone like Saka 4-5 years and half a dozen penalties to finally reach good numbers, it's taken Bowen the same amount of time but without the pens.

Son is the only 1 on that list that has been doing it season in season out.

Very very few wingers in world football will get 20+ goals or 30+ goals/assists a season, season in season out. Ronaldinho rarely did it, Figo rarely did it, Robben & Ribery never did it, Ljungberg never did it, Cameronesi never did it, Di Maria never did it (certainly not for Madrid or Utd anyway) Giggs never did it. The list goes on.

      Thanks for the stats.
I think we expect more from our wingers because under Klopp's management they were the ones scoring.

Mane was our main scorer until Salah came and they both scored as much as strikers, for the team. Firmino scored much less even if he was the No.9. So, we still expect our wingers to score and contribute A LOT.

Now we have Darwin and Jota who can play as no. 9 and can score, and we have a new coach. Things should change, but again, I'm quite disappointed by Diaz's and Gakpo's output, so far. With a 4-3-3, our goalscorers were on the wing, simple as that. I could change soon though.

Out of the lot, the one I enjoy the most is Trossard. Not a fancy player but he delivers. I like player like him, reminds me of the Rodriguez, Bellamy and Juyt kind of players. Reliable to say the least and consistent.

At the level we're aiming at, we need top players and Gakpo and Diaz (and Nunez) need to prove they are at this level.

It's fine to be excited at how Gakpo's playing in the Euros but it's also fine to be skeptical following his lacklustre displays for us (after similarly impressing in the World Cup 18 months ago).

I think we tried to form Cody into the Firmino replacement and it never really quite worked.

Worth him getting a solid run from the left as he always looks great there playing for Netherlands

Lively again tonight, not everything came off for him and I think the goal has now officially gone down as an OG but he forced the issue. Had a brilliant attempt on the volley well saved to kill the game. Looks far more comfortable out wide.

I would really like it, but I don't see us spending this kind of money (transfer and salary) on a player probably past his peak. Son is still very good, but he probably won't improve. I'm not against it, I just don't believe Liverpool is the kind of club to buy Son.
It could happen if Son does a Coutinho and pushes for a move. It would be good for him. Time to look for some trophies.

Cody has been good, for sure, wouldn’t say brilliant but not average either

In saying that, we’ve seen him for a whole season and he shouldn’t be a first 11 player week in and week out but as a lot said last season. We should keep him for rotation and coming in for injuries

We have far bigger issues than Cody which is a non issue
