I was lucky enough to be in the KOP that night just a few rows up from the front and have never experienced anything like it in my life. I'd gone to the Olympiacos, Leverkusen and Juve games, but this was next level. Even a good 45 mins before kick off Anfield was raucous. Towards the end it was absolutely incredible, just a massive wall of noise, and when Gudjohnsen shot wide (hearts in mouth) that was that. Cue the best YNWA of all time. I remember the poor sod stood next to me, his glasses fell off near the final whistle after someone's arm had flailed up and I thought sh*t mate that is not the time for this
What a privilege it must have been to be there. The Gudjohnsen shot still lives on viscerally in my memory - even now I get PTSD thinking about it. Something I share with my brother and talk about like a near death experience that!
The noise that was made that night...it's remarkable that it was
only 40,000. Chelsea didn't know what had hit them - you can tell that by the very fact that they failed to anticipate that early surge that resulted in the goal and failing that a red card for Cech and a penalty. And as walt says - the 6 minutes of added time was just bizarre and astonishing! I recall some idiot had run onto the field that stopped play for about 30 seconds but apart from that, where the other stoppages came from besides subs I'll never know.
