      Ryan Gravenberch Player Thread (M)
      Sep 01, 2023 09:44:13 pm
An ecstatic Ryan Gravenberch vowed to give everything he's got for Liverpool after completing his deadline-day move to the club.

The Netherlands international became the Reds' fourth recruit of the summer window, having completed the formalities of his transfer from Bayern Munich at the AXA Training Centre on Friday, subject to a work permit.

Get your 'Gravenberch 38' Liverpool shirt at our online store here
Gravenberch, who has selected the No.38 shirt, received a warm welcome from Jürgen Klopp and his teammates – including compatriots Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo – upon his arrival, and now can't wait to grace Anfield as a Liverpool player.

The 21-year-old sat down with Liverpoolfc.com shortly after putting pen to paper on a long-term contract to conduct his first interview as a Red...

Ryan, it's deadline day but the move is done. How are you feeling to have joined Liverpool?

Yeah, I'm very happy. Very happy that the deal is done and I'm finally here.

How have the last couple of days been for you? This move has happened quite quickly…

For me, I just had to be relaxed. I spoke a lot with my agent and he said to me, 'Everything is going to be alright.' For me, I had to just be relaxed and just wait for this moment.

Was it difficult to be relaxed given all the speculation?

To be honest, for myself it was quite difficult but at the end I'm very happy to be here.

Why are Liverpool the right club for you?

If you see it from the outside, it's one of the biggest clubs in the world. Also the fans, the stadium, I think everything from the outside is top. So that's why.

Obviously there are a couple of guys here in the team that you already know from the national team. Did you speak with Virgil and Cody about the move?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Before the move I spoke a lot with the guys and they said we have a good team, everything is top here. Actually my decision was quick.

They seemed pretty happy to see you this morning…

      Yeah, finally!

You also know another Liverpool legend in Gini Wijnaldum. Have you had an opportunity to speak with him?

Not yet, not yet. I didn't speak with him but I'm definitely going to speak to him after this move.

really please as I think this was one Jürgen really wanted and now we have apotent midfield and a deadly strike force. We have enough in defence as long as we dont leave them wide open so let the good times roll

Said after we signed Endo that we should now go for an all rounder in MF rather than another DM. This is obviously what we've gone for and, while I've not really seen much of Gravenberch, I think on paper he looks perfect for this.

His stats show he can defend as well as attack. Think Endo will be the safe option at DM while Jürgen tries to bring through Ryan and Baj as long term options. But it makes total sense, and was necessary, that Ryan can cover for Dom and Mac as well.

Our midfield options look good now. Our forward options even better (as long as we keep Salah!). Be interesting to see how our defence plays this season, but I think it will be better than last, and will get more protection from better pressing higher up, so I think we are in good shape now and can compete for the title this season.

Happy with this signing. I’ve wanted him since he was first linked.

Good price for a player with unique qualities. He’s big, mobile, good at carrying the ball and has huge potential. Needs to improve off the ball but Klopp should be able to work his magic.

Let's hope all four midfielders settle quickly and form some kind of partnership.  Absolutely crazy when you think we have changed our entire midfield in one summer but the club have responded reasonably well in that department.

Obviously still questions in all of the defensive positions but we should have little excuses up front in terms of both supply and finishing.

Gravenberch clearly needs to kick on because something wasn't going right at Bayern.

Great thing is he's 21 so still has plenty of time to grow and be moulded into a key player for us. I think he is much too progressive a midfielder to be sat deep, and since we have Alexis, Thiago, Bajcetic and Endo who to varying degrees are more suited to this, he complements the options we have quite well. I love the Dutch connection - who doesn't like a Dutch midfielder? The boys will make him feel like it's a second home for him here.

I was underwhelmed when we signed him, maybe because I watched a few games when he was at Bayern.

But reading how Ajax fans highly rate him and most coaches do, I'm going to be optimistic and hope he pulls off a Mane or Salah influence.

He refused to go to Orange junior team (U21) to work hard for our shirt. For me, it is a huge sign that he wants to work hard and fight for his place.

He has been criticised firmly by Koeman and the U21 manager. They can f. off. They do not understand. If he plays well for us in the future, they will benefit too. They are only looking into it short term. I hate the international breaks so much.

That's the Ronald Koeman that ran off and dropped the national team as soon as Barca came calling.

100% mate. Imagine it must be a bit sh*t to having to travel to play u21s v Moldova and Macedonia when your career is about to go to another level. It suits everyone in the long run that he gets settled at LFC and into the swing of things as at this stage he will learn 10x more from a half a match in the PL than any number of u21 games. We need him to be ready for the Wolves game and beyond, and it's a great sign that this is where his focus lies.

Don't know what you are complaining about, that Jonny Evans is a decent defender (about 10 years ago).

The Athletic has an article on his signing: https://theathletic.com/4838182/2023/09/07/ryan-gravenberch-liverpool-transfer-inside-deal/

The title reads: How Liverpool signed Ryan Gravenberch: Patience, family meetings – and Klopp

Who would've thought?! Sometimes you need patience to sign a player...

      Really liked what i saw,

He has some long strides when running with the ball and not afraid to run at defences. I like that.

Looking forward to see how he develops here, just hope it was cramp and not an injury, already!

A decent debut with what you would expect from a player who has spent most of the last year on the bench with some good and some bad.

Flashes of his potential which bodes well once he is up to speed.

That cross was pinpoint for the goal. He wasn't afraid to stick his head in there and battle. I thin he's only going to look better with time. Although I do wonder if he's rotational with Dom and Mac or is Mac going to get stuck playing the 6 role. Because Gravenberch doesn't look like a 6 to me.

Given what we've seen so far from Klopp it looks like Mac Allister is his go to 6 for the moment.

He had a nice debut the other night. His passing was a little wayward but you can see he has a decent touch, his first stouch won 3-4 fouls in this match and the cross for the goal was terrific. My only concern would be that he is going to get kicked a lot in the epl. As for his position i'd imagine he plays in one of the 2 more advanced roles and does a similar job to Jones when he plays. Deffo not a 6,I think Bajcetic is most suited to play this role myself butideally the club will be back in the market in January for a genuine contender. I think it's fair to say they have whiffed thus far in replacing Fabinho so it'll be Mac and Baj (and Thiago) to cover as 6 in the mean time.
