We were almost the epitome of the old cliche āitās a game of two halvesā yesterday.
First half we were slow, lethargic and sloppy with the ball but second half was the complete opposite. We moved the ball, and ourselves, a lot quicker and poor old Ipswich couldnāt handle us.
I also wonder if the decision to bring Konate on was for his pace to cover Trent moving into midfield, which he didnāt do much of in the first half but was constantly there in the second half.
Always great to start with a win and a clean sheet as well. For a time we were top of the table but Brighton have since taken that off us - but itās put Everton bottom of the pile so itās alright for now.
Hopefully the start of a really special season.
New season, new era but still the same inept officiating as Burns should have been sent off for a blatant handball but thatās to be expected with this League.
Alisson - had little to do other than one save from the Greaves header, which he comfortably held. Another clean sheet to his name.
Alexander-Arnold - didnāt do much first half but ran the show in the second until he was brought off. Great ball for Salah to set up the first. Maybe could have done a bit better with the effort he had from the edge of the box.
Quansah - a little unlucky to be the one who had to make way as I thought he was our best player in the first half but maybe when he got skinned on the right towards the end showed Slot that his lack of pace meant a switch was needed if we wanted Trent to play more in midfield.
Van Dijk - didnāt grab any headlines with a great performance but he was solid and dependable in typical Virgil fashion.
Robertson - was the worst performer in a Red shirt in the first half, really off the pace. Second half was a slight improvement but still didnāt look as good as we know he can be.
Szoboszlai - was poor in the first half but second half was a different player. Some lovely touches, clever passes and was linking defence to attack the way we need to him to.
Gravenberch - looked fairly comfortable as the holding midfielder, couple of good challenges. Not sure he was as good as some are making out but he was good.
Mac Allister - was rather invisible for most of the game. Expecting big things from him this season but yesterday didnāt deliver. Even when the rest of the side improved second half, he was still a step behind.
Salah - goal, assist and a persistent pest for the Ipswich back line. New season, new era, same Mo.
Jota - just as well he scored when he did because otherwise heād be getting slaughtered for missing that header. Probably had our best moment in the first half as well with that turn on the halfway line.
Diaz - plenty of hard work from Lucio but the final bit wasnāt there for him yesterday, whether that be the cross or the shot. But Ipswich couldnāt get near him.
Konate - solid show from the big man, didnāt have too much defending do but what he did was done with minimal fuss.
Bradley - nice ten to fifteen minute cameo from the young lad. Got up the right wing and was just breezing past their players.
Tsimikas - didnāt have much time to influence the game and the way Robbo was playing can probably feel a bit aggrieved that he didnāt get on earlier.
Gakpo - came on and got booked. Very little else.
Overall a good start to the season and the Arne Slot reign. Obviously a couple of players not up to speed just yet and a few teething problems with how Slot wants us to play but for an opening game, three points, a clean sheet and a really good 45 minutes will do.
Onto Brentford next week to keep the good start going.
Well in Reds!
