I can only think everyone thought he’d be a clever buy but Slot took one look at him in training and said nah.

Slot has to give him mins

      Gakpo was clearly not fit

Manager should have learned from giving the like of Endo and Elliot - use the squad

It almost feels like he isn't allowed to get minutes, and I'm not sure how much of it has to do with Slot.

He never really fancied Endo and started using him, and the same with Harvey lately.

It’s clear slot didn’t particularly want him and doesn’t rate him at all. Clearly a last minute punt from Hughes that hasn’t worked

Your guess is as good as mine my friend.

There's absolutely no way he's not able to come on for 10-15mins, run about and add some quality/flair in our attack. Excluding Plymouth where he was played with a bunch of kids, we've seen it in every cameo.

While this might be true, there's no way an injured, unable to run Gakpo is a better offensive option than a fit Chiesa.

Hence why people think there's something else at play here. Yesterday's was a bizarre substitution.

What do people think might be at play here then?

Very hard to judge someone based on how little time he has been given and when he has been on the pitch he has shown that he can provide some extra pace and directness

It's not controversial to point out that putting a clearly unfit Gakpo on was frankly stupid, when a presumably fit Chiesa was on the bench. I think Gakpo took a corner, other than that he didn't get a kick. We needed a goal to win the tie and Chiesa was worth a punt.

Whatever way we look at it

The manager does not want to use him, that means there is no point him being there

We have re built the midfield and now it’s time to finish the rest of the team

I would love to see our forward line rejuvenated, hopefully Salah stays but if not then we have a big task. If he does stay then hopefully a couple out and one in would do the job

We won't see him much until there are games that are not important,  and we won't see the best off him until he's had a proper pre season with us.

Next season I expect him to be dyno.  If he stays for that is.

Arne brought Endo and Harvey in from the cold by using them a bit more in specific circumstances, but he has shown the opposite tendency with Chiesa, so I'd be stunned if he's here next season. It may be partly Arne's way of saying please don't sign players without due regard to my vision of the team.

We haven't rebuilt the midfield. We are one short, ideally an athlete, and have been since we failed to bring one in last summer. It's been midfield where we have looked goosed as that same small group of 4 have been sharing the load of 3 places all season (with late minutes from Endo). The gulf in energy and athleticism from the PSG midfield to ours was stark.

It's quite incredible we are where we are in the league (thanks largely to Salah from an attacking perspective), as we are (to quote Carragher who is right on this) a 'work in progress'.

The Klopp side that won the CL and the league, they would wipe the floor with this one. Both full backs in their attacking pomp, the midfield strangling the life out of the opposition, and a world class front three with Mo also in his physical prime.

When he is on song Diaz is the only attacker who is close to the level of Mo, Mane, Firmino.

We cannot judge Chiesa as he simply hasn't been given a fair crack. He was talked up before the Plymouth game, but for some reason that game (when the whole team was sh*te with two children in midfield) has ended Slot's interest in him. Slot got it wrong with Endo and Harvey and started belatedly using them. Unless there is some clause or something we are not aware of, Chiesa is being badly mistreated. Jota has been sh*te yet still gets a game. And Jota unlike Chiesa has never been elite.

It just doesn't make sense. Have a feeling that if Chiesa ever does get a proper chance (start and alongside first teamers) he will impress and make Slot look ridiculous.

I'm no analyst or coach but he sure looks like a player that would improve the more time he gets. His first few appearances he looked tricky and full of piss and vinegar.

      Could not agree more.

Chiesa is also quite possibly our only truly rapid winger at the moment, and I do believe we very, very badly lack pace on the break.

What expectations, there are no expectations, we haven’t even finished this season yet.

Just getting it out there nice and early, injured free, ill free, sharp Chiesa and wallop ker dang.

I wonder is it possible for a Manager who is about to deliver our 2nd title in 35 years to "look ridiculous". He could waltz out in a full clown outfit with the league trophy and not look ridiculous given the incredible season we're having.

I think most (perhaps excluding yourself) will give the manager the benefit of the doubt on this one.
