Yeah safety is paramount. Told my aul fella to be careful driving into town as the road into it is completely surrounded by trees either side. One tree had already come down in the early morning. If that hits you as happened that poor gentleman (RIP) it's not going to end well.
The game was never going to start even if we ignored all the treacherous travelling conditions. Lets pretend it did though. The game would have kicked off, and depending on the wind direction, the first goal kick by a goalkeeper would have resulted in a goal kick or a corner for the opposition. The ref would then have blown his whistle and called it off. 70mph made it unplayable.
As I said before though, had the winds been around 40mph thus making the game somewhat playable, that game would have gone ahead and suited Everton to a tee. It becomes very scrappy, not much incisive, flowing play (us), and plenty of get it into the mixer (them). It would have been their conditions.
When you look at how tired Newcastle looked today after what was a draining game for both sides, it's also worked in our favour. Just over 2 days rest playing a game in shocking conditions against a yard dog outfit at the pit, no thanks. We can fit the fixture in during a midweek gap in our schedule in Jan or Feb (not being in much no such scheduling issues for Everton).
