      LFC 'Cult Hero' XI
      Mar 12, 2025 10:02:55 am
Anyone like to make their LFC 'Cult Hero' XI? Always cheers me up seeing some of these names on paper.

Players who weren't always the greatest (some were great) but on their day made us smile.

Will be some good players on the list and some not so good but all left a positive impression on me regardless.

Some great players like Hyypia and Barnes have missed out just because I think they are full on heroes.

This is mine but happy to bow to others. Especially any older lads who have names previous to my memory of around 97 onwards.

Gone for Rafa as manager just over Houllier for the CL victory and therefore will use Rafas beloved 4-2-3-1.

                                           Dudek

           M Babbel  S Henchoz   R Song     Staunton

                                  G Mac         L. Leiva

                           P Berger  L Garcia   D Kuyt

                                            D Origi

My bench is Titi Camera, Matip, Heggem, Rob Jones, Crouch, David James and Litmanem.

Line up and bench isn't down to quality just how these players make me feel seeing their names.

And by the way there's a few players in this current squad that in years to come are well in the mix.

Kells, Nunez, Endo, and perhaps Kostas.

      Finnan Kolo Klavan Enrique
      Kuyt Endo Smicer Yossi
      Titi Origi

Tough choice between Titi and Crouchy.

Benayoun I think deserves to be on there, probably Shaqiri as well.

Raul Merieles probably wasn't around long enough but he always had something about him?

      Craig Bellamy?

      A cult hero to me is somebody who never should've had a football career but their heart got them through it so I've gone for;

      Warner

      Flanagan Kyrgiakos Klavan Tsimikas

      Biscan Endo Lucas

      Kuyt Crouch Heksey

Nice thread. Cheer-up time after a grim nightā€¦

                            Bruce Grobbelaar

Rob Jones.  Dan Agger.  Nat Philips.  Fabio Aurelio.

                      Sammy Lee.  Jan Molby.

                          Gary McAllister.

Ronnie Rosenthal.    Neil Mellor.   Luis Garcia.

      Subs:
David Fairclough, Darwin Nunez,  Wataru Endo,  Divock Origi,  Jason McAteer
      Titi Camara, Howard Gayle

I went back to the late 70s / 80s from memory for players I particularly followed, if only briefly in some cases. Iā€™d like to spend more time on this because I think thereā€™s loads of candidates Iā€™ve forgotten.

Thereā€™s a few wonderful players, the walking wounded, a few unsung heroes, a few one- or two-game wonders, honest tryers, the odd serial underachiever, and a comedy character or two (thereā€™s been others - Djimi gets an honourable mention).

I was tempted to throw in Glen Hysen, if only for his interview in Shoot! magazine when I was a lad. When asked about his favourite hobbies he gave a simple answer: ā€œmy missus says itā€™s sex sex and more sex.ā€

The readership was aged about 9 to 13!

Far too talented to be cult heroes, as was Heskey as someone mentioned earlier. A cult hero to me is someone who can play from the bench and be inspired beyond their natural level.

Canā€™t remember seeing much of Song or Meijer.  A couple of the others (Diouf and Pegguy) really ended up as hate figures didnt they?

Nah that was the other African keeper.

Yeah Diouf just made a c**t of himself spitting at the Celtic fan. That soft c**t was cheered like Nunez when he first turned up - Diouf, Diouf, Diouf is on fireeeee........"

Meijer was a big yard dog who was there as cheap back up to Fowler, Owen and Heskey. And turned up in Dortmund for the Uefa Cup final getting bladdered with the fans.

Another part of the "cult hero" status is commitment/passion/aggression. It's why people liked Sakho when he was obviously no good, Robbo's name gets chanted so much and almost always ater a fierce tackle rather than a strong run, accurate cross.
