I think one of the reasons was to help Wrexham out of financial difficulty, like when we've played pre-season games and have let them keep gate receipts

The main reason is to play less games on the Anfield pitch, so it stays in good condition.

      Youth Cup Final Second Leg
Good luck tonight lads, here's to comebacks as they try to overturn a 2-1 deficit tonight.
Its on Sky for those who didnt know.

Danish goalkeeper Martin Hansen has been ruled out of tonight's Youth Cup final second leg at Old Trafford with a broken finger.
Hansen sustained the injury in the warm-up before last week's first leg against Manchester United - but remarkably played through the pain.

However, the Academy coaching staff believe it would be too much of a risk for him to start this evening.

The decision was made easier by the availability of last year's Youth Cup winning keeper David Roberts.

The under-18s go into the second leg 2-1 down, though a single goal victory would be enough to force extra-time because the away goals rules does not apply.

Coach John Owens is confident his young side have plenty of goals in them.

"We can't be too cavalier but we know we have plenty of players who can score. We've done well on this score during the Youth Cup – we got seven overall against Newcastle in the semis," he said.

"In midfield we've got Ray Putterill, Jimmy Ryan and Charlie Barnett who all like to have a go, plus Ryan Flynn and Craig Lindfield who get goals up front.

"We've thought from the very start that the game wouldn't be decided during the Anfield leg, and we're confident this is still the case."

Owens believes a crucial factor in the Reds' chances is how his boys cope with the Old Trafford atmosphere.

"I think they can handle it, but this is one of the imponderables when you're talking about footballers this age," he said.

"Hopefully we'll have some of our noisy supporters there too. But looking at the bigger picture, yes we want to do well in the Youth Cup, but our main aim is to produce players for the first-team. If these boys are going to make that step then they've got to be able to perform on this stage week in, week out."

Swedish midfielder Astrit Ajdarevic is expected to start tonight after missing the first leg through suspension. Lee Woodward will make way.

Meanwhile, United will again be without captain Craig Cathcart, who missed the first leg after he was called up to the senior squad. His absence this time is down to a season-ending knee injury sustained in training last week.

Brilliant stuff. Well done back to back Youth Cups.  A tremendous achievement.  The chips were down as they went away needing a result.

Stick some of them in the first team next Tuesday...!  ;)

      BBC Sport

Liverpool secure FA Youth Cup win

Liverpool won the FA Youth Cup after beating Manchester United 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out at the end of the second leg at Old Trafford.

Robbie Threlfall had scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute, volleying in from just inside the box to make the aggregate score 2-2.

That took the match into extra-time, but neither side could find a winner.

Sam Hewson blasted United's fifth penalty over the bar to ensure holders Liverpool retained their trophy.

And Liverpool were good value for their success after playing the better football throughout.

The Anfield youngsters twice hit the post - first when Craig Lindfield's shot was tipped on to the upright by keeper Ron-Robert Zieler and then in extra-time when Lindfield's angled drive crashed against the woodwork.

United's best two chances fell to Febian Brandy, who finished weakly when through on goal in the second half of normal time and had an acrobatic effort well saved late on in extra-time.

Both sides were clearly tired at the end and the trophy was decided on penalties for only the second time in the tournament's 55-year history.

I missed it though, been helping my mate move. Had to rely on texts from my dad.

Spearing had a good game and even had Steve Heighway suggesting he was good enough to go into the first team now! Also Lindfield and Putterill looked like they had a bit more class than the others but for me Robbie Threlfall was definitely man of the match, he was determined to put in a good game especially after he scored an own goal in the first leg also the goal he scored last night really was well taken.
My worry is though how many of them are going to make the massive step up and get to join the first team? But I suppose even if you find one or two future stars it will all be of benefit to the club.
