Been hampered with a hamstring strain last 3 weeks, went out today and did a 5 mile run just slower than half marathon pace, looks all good again.

One thing I've learned from getting older is that you have to let things heal. Whenever I've had nagging, lingering issues it's because I just don't rest injuries like I should.

Started biking again and it's definitely helping my left knee (torn meniscus). I'm able to sleep through the night without pain now which is a plus and I'm also now able to start some strengthening exercises and stretches that also seem to be helping. If it continues to heal I'd like to try and start running again sometime this summer. We'll see.

Last run of the year and topped out with 1275 miles. Most I have ever run in a calendar year.

Longest run of this training block 16 miles, trying to build endurance for the latter parts of the Stafford 1/2 marathon in March which has a few hills.
Hopefully I can beat last years time.

Oh you'll be good if you are running 16 miles already.

I finally started back running again about a month ago. Started with run/walk and I'm up to 2 miles every other day now. Still having some knee pain but it's gotten a little better. Still slow AF but hoping to eventually get some pace back. Trying to stay patient and not do too much too early. My weight really ballooned after my injury so I've started losing but it's slow going. I probably need to lose about 35 lbs by my birthday in May to reach my goal. Can be done but dieting is no fun for someone like me that loves food.

Jeffing is probably the best approach to restarting running after a long lay off.

Been away a few months due to family issues but have managed to carry on with the running. Sometimes it’s the only thing that keeps you sane ā˜ŗļø

      Managed

      1.39.51 at the Stafford Half
      1.39.32 at the Shakespeare Half

Got a couple of 10k’s lined up for June so need a shift in training emphasis.

Those are good times, better than my PB (1:41).

I’ve been biking mostly as it helps with my knee pain. Hope to start running again this summer if the knees heal up. Have dropped about 18lbs but still have about 30 to go ideally. Kind of stuck for now as I haven’t had time for this long as bike rides that burn through the calories.

8 weeks from the Lisbon marathon and longest run of this training block a steady paced 19 miles.

Will be doing more long runs with a element of marathin pace from here.

Question for fitness folk. I put 2kg on in a week, then dropped it in a day. FFS.

Is that basically down to what internet says, retained water ?

Yea if you weigh yourself every day, you can see a lot of weight drop off all the sudden. It’s really weird. You can also ā€œgainā€ a lot quickly too.

Just an update, Lisbon marathon was 2 weeks ago and it was a disaster!

10 miles in I realised it was way harder than it should be and looking at my HR I was running at threshold pace. So decided sub 3.40 was not happening and might as well just jog in for a sub 4 pace, that’s just easy jogging pace normally.

However the right calf which had been bugging me for the last 6 weeks and had been getting more tight since mile 4 decided it was enough at the 18 mile mark!

I managed to run/walk until mile 23 after which the calf was just cramping if I tried to run too much so ended up mostly walking the last 3 miles.

Probably should have done a DNF at the 18 mile marker but just couldn’t bear the thought of getting picked up by a medical support team and not getting a medal.

Finished in 04.15.02, one of the toughest I have ever done but also slowest ā˜ŗļø

Man that sucks but kudos to you for finishing.  My knees have been slowly getting better with biking so I’m hoping to maybe start running again in a month or so. Unfortunately have had a rough few months in a lot of personally areas and my weight has ballooned to my heaviest ever. At my yearly checkup yesterday I was 224 lbs. and my blood pressure was a touch high so I really am going to have to make some changes.

Well done on getting through all that although hope it hasn't made your recuperation worse!! Still a solid effort - beyond my skills.

Not been in a proper running regime for a while. Just bought some new trainers too so will have to get back to it. Maybe next week. ..

Have really let myself go this holiday season. Weigh more than I ever have before in my entire life. 230 lbs. So, today marks the first day of a new eating regimen. Cleaner foods, less processed stuff (hopefully), more exercise and more water, no soda or alcohol (probably going dry for a good while). Have some important events coming up later this spring/summer that I need to look like my old self. Hopefully can start adding running back into my biking, also thinking about getting a gym membership and hitting the weights again. Wish me luck.

If its any consolation dude I'm the same. Probs worst shape I've been in in 15 years. Now in early 50s and its so hard making time now........and I still like the taste of beer way too damned much!

Started to get a bit more routine but holidays screw it up.

      You'll get there fella.

Know the feeling mate. I was going well up until around May last year then the wheels fell off. 2 stone on since then (28lbs). Was up to 14 and a half stone.

Started back last Monday and feeling better already. Around 4lbs off so hoping to see another few lbs off this week and I'll be happy.

That was my problem last year mate, was flying until May, then went on holidays and never really got back into the swing of it.

You can do it big man.

An exercise worth considering which I discovered during my calf rehab, deep water running, really gets the HR up with zero impact on your joints.
