Our number 2 is available is it not?

I know Rafa said we're not signing one, but maybe the shirt is being left open for a new left back?

Something odd Zenit do, is they never have a player in the no.12 shirt, it is reserved for the supporters (the 12th man)

      Zenit's best striker is Pogrebniak
But if to speak about goals Skrtel is not best there are three backs who scored one goal more than him!

But as a defender, its more about the goals conceded rather than the goals scored that everyone is concerned about, if he fails to score for us ever, but hardly concedes a goal, I will be happy.

A bit of Information about Martin Skrtel.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT OUR NEW BOY
      Paul Hassall 11 January 2008
You've heard all the speculation, digested the paper talk and analysed the stats, but just how well do you know our latest signing?
Liverpoolfc.tv reveals 10 things you never knew about Martin Skrtel:

      1. Skrtel was a competent hockey player and could have followed a career in the sport until his passion for football took over and - fortunately for us - he opted to ply his trade in the world of the beautiful game instead.

      2. He has already had a taste of what it means to play football on Merseyside having featured for former club Zenit St Petersberg in a 1-0 UEFA cup defeat against Everton on December 5, 2007.

      3. At the age of 23 Martin is already an established international with Slovakia. He has 15 caps to-date and scored his first and only goal for his country in a Euro 2008 Qualifier when he netted the opener in a 6-1 win at home to Cyprus.

      4. A move to Liverpool has left him so excited he has had trouble sleeping. He said: "I have realised that in all likelihood a new era of my life is beginning. I struggled to get any sleep on Saturday night, and I normally have no problems sleeping."

      5. The 6ft 4 defender came second in the list of the best football players named by Slovak Football Union and newspaper 'Pravda' in December 2006.

      6. He was a key member of the Zenit side that clinched the 2007 Russian League title - their finest achievement since winning the USSR Championship in 1984.

      7. If Liverpool qualify for next season's Champions League he could well come up against his former teammates as a result of their title success.

      8. He becomes Liverpool's most expensive defender, with the fee surpassing the previous record for Daniel Agger in January 2006.

      9. Martin was born on December 15, 1984, on the very same day as guitarist Joshua Third, of cult rock band The Horrors.

      10. He rose through the ranks at Slovakian outfit FC Previdza and also played for FC Trencin before leaving his homeland for Zenit in 2004. He played 113 matches for the Russian side, scoring five goals in total.

True it doesnt matter if he doesn't score many for us if he is preventing opposition from scoring. I feel he will chip in with a few goals for us though, and even if he doesnt he will create space for others to, with his height i feel he will intimidate defences when he comes up for corners and with him being new and rather unknown more established opposition centre backs are likely to be man marking him due to his height and them not knowing the threat he poses. Rafa likes to encourage the defenders not to be scared of having a shot at goal aswell which seems to be why hyypia, aurelio have been having a few shots at goal recently.

Apparently he can't play tomorrow, because it is close of the Russian season, so he is not match-fit.

I was interested in him only because he came from Russian club.I read once the article about Liverpool Russia relationship. It said there weren't any transfers from Russia to Liverpool and vice versa.Only matches between Liverpool and Soviet clubs. So Skrtel is the first in that way. One my friend told me that it would be real good if any Russian or our Belarus players came to Liverpool.

I can honestly say I know nothing about our new signing personally but with one title under his belt he may have the taste for another perhaps?  ;) I'm pretty sure Rafa wouldn't lash that kind of money around if he didn't think he was worth it so let's enjoy what he brings to the team. :kop5cf8koxp6:  Welcome to the club Martin! :aaliverpool2xt1:

All or nothing with Lester. Class.

Have to agree, he looks and sounds like a mean piece of work. Just hope he has the class to go with it. No doubt Carragher will be like flea in his ear in his early Liverpool days....
