Anyway back to Cook, any justifiable reasons why he is still being selected?

Because there is currently no one batter..
I watch extensive county cricket and trust me there is no opener better than cook currently, there are a couple with potential, Nick Gubbins, Joe Leach I like and potentially Rory Burns but if you're bringing them in it's not to open currently, the only one who may long term is Gubbins but Cook is still a better option currently (as opener, I really like Leach for 3)

He still averaged over 40 last year in tests, he has started this year slowly but still got two fifties.. as well as a big hundred for England A a couple of weeks back

In cricket you understand it's a game where one ball can make you look daft and there's no second chance, it's always better to give one more chance than one less.

You can't and shouldn't judge him on the two balls he's got this match or indeed over 5 test matches this year. He's still the best option to open the batting
You see the trouble we have had replacing Trott at 3, KP at 4 and to a lesser extent James Taylor at 5.. to throw Gubbins in opening with Jennings and then Malan at 3 is suicide

OK fair enough, its just sad to compare the Cook of now with the Cook of 5 odd years ago when he was so dominant

Yeah but that comes to everyone.. but he's still the best option
I guarantee you he scores runs to win a game this series

The only thing I was disappointed with this match is even though he got two jaffas he shouldn't be getting out to the same ball twice
He should be playing for it cause the bowler will always try it again

What level cricket have you played?

That's a far worse dismissal by Root than either of cooks

Oh just schoolboy cricket level, nothing advanced, enjoy the various formats though they all have a different vibe with altering tactics and intensity.

Ive been away at the lakes with the missus for the last two days so only caught bits on my phone and a bit of highlights on bbc.

Stuck in traffic on the M6 now so just refreshing the bbc coverage.

It's been our policy lately of trying to hit out of trouble which would be nice if we could do it, but really for long term success we have to start building proper innings and partnerships. Loads of time left in the test. Stay in and frustrate their attack.

Its a long series in a short time and Braod and Anderson need lots of time in between innings or they'll be dead by test 4 and 5.

Big partbership this one. Need a good knock from one of them to try and set this up for Butler to take it away from them.

Lose one more we could be skittled.

We need something now from Curran and Adil. I would say Broad but his heads gone these days. If i see Broad sh*t himself one more time at a low 80s bowler as well i will despair.

Everyone knows he got hit 4 years ago but get in F***ing line and keep your eye on the ball now. His country needs him to front up rather than swing wildly.

Hopeless from the batting lineup once more though to be left in this situation.

Hope to scramble another 100 runs to make it some sort of target.

Fantastic win. Both teams have more to offer yet but this should be a top series.

If every test was like this why would you watch any other form of Cricket it just brilliant.

Listened to it this morning on test match special.

Just a shame it's not on terrestrial tv. Would have been more relevant like it was back in the day.

I'd replace him with Woakes and Moeen in for Malan.

Pope Surrey wicket keeper.. unlikely to play I'd think just get him in and around

I'd imagine Woakes will replace Stokes and Mo will come in for Malan

Be interesting to see what they do with the batting line up

      Cook
      Jennings
      Root
      Top 3

      Then below that?

Might mean Bairstow batting 4 as well as keeping

      Bairstow
      Butler
      Mo
      Curran
      Woakes
      Rashid
      Broad
      Anderson

Weakens the top order even more for me that
