Need some career advice guys. So, I graduated from Uni over a year ago and virtually walked in to a well paid job as a Youth Engagement Coordinator. Now, the job has run its course, I am still getting paid and but I am losing my patience with it for several reasons. I am primarily a youth worker. Jobs in the youth work sector are so far a few between. My current role involves me going to schools across the North West and leading on assmeblies with 6th form. Basically, there is a hell of a lot of admin to it, which normally I would have no issue with, but my passion for the role has dwindled and I find it very difficult to motivate myself. I do a hell of a lot of travelling, which doesn't bother me either, but the processes of the job are becoming more and more complex when there are simpler ways to do it. Long story short, I have been pulled up about a few errors I have made, minor ones at that, and I know they are ones I am making due to motivation levels. I know this may seem very immature, I can understand that, but I feel like I need out. I am not happy and whilst the money is good, its taking up my life, early starts and unsocialable hours, which wouldn't usually bother me except the role is boring me now.

Basically, I am considering handing in my notice, meaning I would leave in the next month, and doing sessional work to gain experience. I have applied for a few full-time permanent roles and basically my age has been an issue, people not keen to employ a young youth worker. But I can get sessional work, at a much lower pay rate. This is something I am seriously considering. Has anyone ever been in a similar situation and may be able to provide some support? Feeling a bit lost at the moment.

Sometimes Paul you need to take a backward or sideways step to find a different route to your career goals, so providing you can afford to take the financial hit, go for it.

I know Debs, I have been thinking about it for a while now. I've spoken at length with it with my Mum and Dad and they both think I am a bit foolish doing it but they don't understand the sector that well.

Parents don't always know what's for the best mate.  As you say they don't know the sector like you do, nor do they know what the employment situation is in Liverpool.

Go with your gut instinct, with some input from senior people within the industry.

Cheers Debs, it is something I have been in deep discussion with senior people in the sector. I work with a lot of outside organisations and have spoken with length with colleagues from them. Their general advice is that 'you need to start from the bottom and work your way up' so, eventually, I think I will have to look to that. In fact, I received a phone call this afternoon from a fella offering me really appealing sessional work so going to have a look at that.

There you go Paul, it seems that building up a good network of sessional work will give you some good experience, contacts for the future and probably a variety of jobs/situations which would be more fulfilling for you personally.

Exactly! One of the networks nearly worked out well for me, had a job interview, good pay and got offered the role. Then funding got cut so was jibbed off unfortunately. Patience is the main thing.

      Totally agree reddebs.
I was doing a Politics and Sociology course at bristol uni years ago and utterly hated it.
I ended up dropping out after 2 years but loved being in Bristol...great town.
Anyway, i ended up at home scratching my head and really at a total loss for what to do with my life.
I started to think about all the things i passionately loved. I soon realized that playing for Liverpool was never going to happen for me and my fat ass but working in the film industry could be something i'd love.
I knew no one who had ever gone into the business and ended up heading down to london and going to the London Film Commission.
I went in every day for a week and just sat there in the reception area reading books and pamphlets and generally getting in their way!
Eventually, just to get rid of me and my terrible tea making skills, they put me in contact with a Location Manager who was doing a tiny and crap film in the capital.
5 weeks of no pay and hard work later i got offered an assistant location manager's job on the dire TV show 'Peak Practice'.
They got me a car, helped with my rent and gave me terrible money but i was living out a dream and learning so much.
15 years later i find myself here in Los Angeles as a 1st Assistant Director making TV commercials that take me all over the world with great people, fun adventures, creative outlets and some security to own a house and a decent lifestyle.

I feel very glad that i took the risk, went against others opinions and worked bloody hard.
You just have to find what makes you excited each morning to go into work, that makes the hours go by in a flash because you feel stimulated and can go home with a smile on your face.

Follow your dreams....the money will follow.

That's amazing mate. When I finished studying Economics, I felt a bit lost too. It's not that I dislike Economics - quite the opposite, I love Economic theory and particularly Economic history - but I found that I had very little interested in the kind of jobs my friends from University were going into, such as working for banks, financial institutions and so on. I worked for 3 and a half years in an economic research foundation and it was great experience, but it simply did not fulfill me and I just knew I needed a change. When I was thinking about what to do, 3 main things stood out for me: music, cinema and sports (I also considered specializing in economic history and go into research in that area, but I left that as Plan B). I don't think I have much talent for actually doing any of those things (that is, playing sports, being a musician, a film director or anything of that kind), so I tried to look at it from a business perspective, like working in the music or film business sectors, sports management, and so on. In the end, I decided sports was the thing I know the most about and I'm more passionate about so I gave it a try. I did a MBA in Sports Marketing and Management here but it was only nearly 2 years after I finished the MBA that an opportunity in fact showed up (which I have already talked about, the World Cup). At the moment I'm just waiting to be called for the 2016 Olympic Games Organizing Committee, I'm fairly sure it's happening as I have my contacts there so I'm just enjoying some time off work right now. I'm still unsure about what the future holds for me in the sports market after we have no more major events to host here but I'm more excited than ever about working, acquiring more experience, and building my career. (My current plans involve going to Liverpool after the end of the olympics and do the MBA Football Industries)

It's not always easy or even possible to work with what you love, but I think everyone should give themselves a chance of working with what truly motivates them.

Anyway, Paul, I wish you very good luck whatever choice you make! You're very young so even if it turns out to be a mistake, there's plenty of time to correct them. It's easier to take risks now then when (I believe) you don't have a family to support, children to care for, etc, so I'd follow your instincts mate.
