In my generation its Carragher. Never got to see the past legends at the back.

Alan Hansen - grace, composure, great football brain, timing, leadership and instilled confidence in all around him.....admittedly he could be pretty poor with the old heading and wasn't that good in front of the oppositions goal BUT he was still dynamite.
The first defender who I used to pretend to be in the playground.

Liverpool have blessed with many great defenders over the years and all of the above are worthy of mention.One man stands out for me and it has to be Gerry Byrne.The guts that man gave to the RED cause in the 1965 F.A. Cup final against Leeds when he broke his collar bone after about 3 minutes.He played virtually the whole match with this injury ( no subs in those days. )It was no wonder the crowd went wild when he carried the cup around Anfield with Gordon Milne B4 The Inter Milan Match.All Liverpool current players should be made to sit and watch Gerry play in that match so they understand what commitment means.

In his prime, You couldn't touch Sammy Hyypia. He is still defending and STILL scoring goals!

The only thing letting Carra down is his lack of goals,scored more own goals i think.

I just can't decide on who is/was our best defender.....there have been so many good ones, and they have all been mentioned here from Gerry Byrne, Ron Yeats, Chris Lawler, Tommy Smith from the 60's through to Phil Neal, Phil Thompson, Alan Hansen......that season in 1978-79 I think it was, when we only let in about 16 goals all season, what a defence we had....

I think I would have to go with Alan Hansen, with his silky smooth defensive skills, he always made the game look easy and never looked rushed or harried, I used to love the way he bought the ball out of defence and just ran with it....a very skillful player.

Through to Sami and Jamie now....we've certainly been blessed with the best.....long may it continue.

apart from that Phil Neal played  417 matches without a break from 23 October 1976 to 24 September 1983. That record hasn't broken yet!
