      Shankly played for Cardiff!?
      Feb 07, 2008 10:34:36 pm
Just been on the Cardiff City messageboard and someone said he did, and posted this:

"Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly played once for Cardiff City.During the 1939-45 war, players in the forces could turn out as guests in wartime regional football for the club nearest to where they were based.During 1942,Shankly,then a Preston North End and Scotland wing-half ,was stationed at RAF St Athan.
On 3 October 1942 ,City mamager Cyril Spiers invited him to play at Ninian Park against Lovells Athletic, the Newport confectionery manufacturers team in a league west match. His match fee was 30 shillings(£1.50),but in conversation with the Lovells players Shankley discovered that they recieved £5 per match. So he never played for City again, and joined Lovells."

Like him even more now!! Did anyone know this? How awesome! Does anyone have any more info ?

Nicola all league games were cancelled during the war years 1939/45.So what happened matches were staged mainly for the forces and clubs were allowed to sign players on as guest players. Our own Bob Paisley was a guest player for Bristol City and the great Billy Liddell was a wartime guest for  Chelsea, Cambridge,Dunfermline,Linfield  and Toronto Scottish in Canada. Most footballers signed on as guest players for clubs in the area they were stationed.Hope this helps to clarify the situation for you.

Well you learn something every day, knew about that WWII stuff Billy1 said above, but never knew about Shanks and Cardiff.

Might be the reason we did quite well there

on the subject of guest players probably Liverpools greatest guest signing was Joe Lois The heavyweight champion of the world. He was in Liverpool  for the American troops and signed for the REDS but I dont think he actually played a game but could be wrong.I am from the Page Moss area and remember the yanks and the Eagle and Child well.( and the problems )

It was all done for publicity as Joe Louis was at the time Heaveyweight champion and as you say he was stationed over here, never actually played a game for us.

Me mum's from Page Moss, I'm from a bit further up, but remember the Eagle
