      Seven subs for top-flight clubs

The Premier League have announced that all 20 clubs will be allowed to name seven substitutes in matches from next season.

Currently, only five substitutes can be named by Premier League teams - with three of them able to be used.

The changing of the rule, which has existed for 12 years, means the League falls into line with major European leagues, UEFA and international tournaments.

The proposal was Tottenham's - and the club are delighted the rule amendment was approved by the league at a meeting of their chairmen.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told his club's official website: "We have promoted and lobbied for this rule change for some time and we are absolutely delighted our proposal was supported by member clubs.

"It's important there is a level playing field across all competitions. We constantly refer to ourselves as the most attractive footballing league in the world, but in order to both maintain that label and improve our competitive edge, it is important to give our managers and coaches greater choice on the substitutes bench, enabling them to be more creative tactically.

"That was the objective behind us bringing this proposal to the table.

"Additionally, it should also mean that younger players from the academy can be given an opportunity to break into the first team."

Personally, I think its a good idea and should have been implemented earlier.

Yes definitley. I always wanted this idea to be introduced into the Premiership, if gives the players in England more of a chance to rest, as there are more options on the bench to replace them! They use this system in spain, why only 5 subs here?

That looks suspiciously like you just posted a link without an article....

Allows to put a youngster or 2 on the bench.

Then if cruising we can put them on. But soemtimes it is far too risky to name them in the original 16 especially if things are going against you.

It also means they may get some playing time instead of just the League Cup.

Yes it will encourage bigger squads and some clubs will use it to put kids on the bench...but!.... in these days of every point counting for glory or monetary prizes at the end of the season will clubs risk having unknowns on the bench or will they just include more established players that would have been left out normally?

I honestly think the more options you give to clubs the easier it will make the tactical battles that used to be so interesting especially when you consider that you never even used to have a sub goalie on the bench!

      I know.....old fart alert! ;D

This can only be good news for ALL young players at english clubs.

More youngsters being blooded = More talented playerspopping up
Maybe this is just what the England national team needs?

      Some of our young players

Scott Carson (Aston Villa – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Nikolay Mihaylov (FC Twente – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Godwin Antwi (Hartlepool United – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Jack Hobbs (Scunthorpe United – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Miki Roque (Xerez CD – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Robbie Threlfall (Hereford United – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Paul Anderson (Swansea City – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Danny Guthrie (Bolton Wanderers – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Adam Hammill (Southampton – to the end of 2007–08 season)
Anthony Le Tallec (Le Mans – to the end of 2007–08 season) Yes he is still ours!
Craig Lindfield (Chester City – to 17th February 2008)
Besian Idrizaj (Wacker Innsbruck – to the end of 2007–08 season

Now granted our reserves are doing great this year and some of the lads out on loan are shining as well but I think we need some sort of enforcement policy for this two extra subs rule, maybe make the clubs bring in two "youngsters" otherwise it will just be abused by the likes of Chelsea who will just have to buy two new players.

Slightly off topic but can someone remind me of the last player we had out on loan who then returned to the club to gain a place in the first team, this isn't a sarcastic request I really can't remember.

The last one I can think of Glenbuck was Danny Murphy. Don't remember any after that but I may be wrong.

An extra couple of subs won't mean these kids get their chance.
