Don't they just get on your nerves when you don't know all that much about them when they start going wrong?

Was copying some pics earlier on from a memory card and when it got onto a vid that was on the memory card, the computer just froze - for ages! Ctrl Alt Del didn't do anything at all so I had to restart in the end. Since then, Windows Explorer is basically not working. Can't go into any folders in my pics without it going into lock up. And can't run scandisk either. Tried to delete the folder that was copied when the problem occured and it wont let me. Just says 'check there is enough space on the disk or if the folder is in use'.

IE seems to be working ok though (obviously), touch wood.

Any advice anyone? Anyone been in a similar situation?

Never had this problem, but I'm used to random errors that Windows pops up now and then.
It looks to me that the problem is folder specific (since IE is working) i.e there is a file that automatically starts whenever Windows boots up,which could be the reason why you can't delete the folder.

1.type msconfig in the run box and see what programs are initialized during windows startup.
2.open task manager and see if it shows the specific file.
3.control panel->administrative services->services.you can set up which services you want to start automatically or manually (or disabled).

Cheers shikhark, very much appreciated mate. I presume if the 'transfer pics from a device' wizard didn't finish, it might be trying to run itself every time Windows boots up?

Probably, if the device is still connected when Windows has started.
If not, it may have set itself to start automatically whenever Windows boots up.In this case,it should show up on the msconfig dialog.

Not in the start up menu of msconfig.

Reckon a system restore before it all went funny might sort it?

      Less file transferring. More moderating.

Sorted the problem in the end. It was as shikhark said 'folder specific'. Cheers for your help shikhark.

The folder that had been created was corrupted and needed to be deleted. But I couldn't delete it because the path to the folder was locked. So I found a nice little bit of freeware called 'Unlocker' that can unlock the path. Unlocked, deleted, bobs my uncle. Everything is back to normal.

Here's a link in case anyone ever finds themselves in the same situation as I was in.

Just had a little read up on that error message on the microsoft site mate and it seems like you might have a 'damaged file system'. That's usually the common cause to show that message apparently.

It seems running a 'chkdsk' can sort the problem out if your hard drive isn't on it's way out. Has your computer crashed or been turned off without shutting down lately?

Here's a guide to running the 'chkdsk'. Hope it helps mate.

Why would you be attempting to 'mount' your hard drive.

I assume Ven that your computer isn't even getting to windows etc.  If not then its probably going to involve quite a bit of titting about.

I invested in a 500G external Hard Drive a while back because I would hate to lose any pictures, music, documents or programs I had saved on my PC! I have a 120G Hard Drive on the PC and piece of mind with the extra storage which is also portable and with a USB port.
I've had to reboot the PC about 3 times since I bought it in 2003 :throw: so a £100 investment or so from Maplins is well worth it. :gt-happyup:

      BUMP! :-\

My PC keeps snuffing it. Literally dying while I'm browsing the internet. Just restarts itself.

The only conclusion I can come to is that it's f*cked! :D

      Any other theories? ;)
