Accounting rules likely due to depreciation of an asset. If you buy a tractor for 50k and it depreciated 10k per year and you sell it after the 4th year for 20k, you’ve technically made a profit.

Neither here nor there...my point still stands. And no, your depreciation would depend on the salvage value and the total years of expected ownership or use. If you sell it early, it doesn't change your depreciating calculation.
