      Destiny?

Rafa Benitez's men grabbed all three points in an ill-tempered game of football at Anfield to close the gap on league leaders Manchester United to just two points.

Although United have one game in-hand, one major statistic might prove that this will no doubt be Liverpool's year.

The last time Liverpool won the domestic title was back in the 1989/1990.

      No big deal?

Well, that was also the last time Liverpool did a league double over Chelsea.

It was in the old English Division 1 then and the Red half of Merseyside came out tops on both the home and away league fixtures by a score of 4-1 and 5-2 respectively.

In the away fixture at Stamford Bridge, Peter Beardsley, Ian Rush, Ray Houghton and espnstar.com's very own football pundit, Steve McMahon got the goals for Liverpool.

The unstoppable Reds went on to clinch the double at Anfield with goals from Ronny Rosenthal, Steve Nicol and Ian Rush.

Liverpool also won the Division 1 league title in the 1972/73 and 1965/66 seasons after doing the league double over Chelsea.

Last League double that won them the domestic title

      16 December 1989
      Chelsea 2-5 Liverpool
      Beardsley (3), Rush 2 (5, 79), Houghton (23), McMahon (51)

      21 April 1990
      Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea
      Rosenthal (25), Nicol 2 (36, 80), Rush (82)

Will the historical stats hold up or will Benitez send this wonderful statistic crashing into oblivion?

Extra : also when Chelsea won the league in 1955 and 2005, they did the double over us.

Tried fixing your tables, but just wouldn't work out for me, so left it as is.

As you're going to be updating it I'll leave it as a seperate thread, unless someone else wishes to merge it with JD's thread.

Stats like that don't work well on forums as you can see!

I've merged the topics.  I don't think Ad is going to be updating it after every game.

In any case the stats are constantly updated on the site http://www.anfield-online.co.uk/stats/2009/lfc-stats.html and in a much easier to read format.  If you've got any suggestions for stats for the site then make a suggestion in the Forum/Site Feedback board.

Manchester United has and will always spend more money than us.
They've got like 5 guys worth 15-20 million on their bench.
and this is the area where we can't compete in - yet.

Liverpool to win title this season despite being 2nd at the moment?

The last time we won the league in 1990 -
      a) we did the double over Chelsea
      b) we beat United at Old Trafford wearing grey

      and those happened this season!

Keane in Liverpool = Liverpool won most of their games by 1 goal
Keane not in Liverpool = Liverpool scoring for fun.
