S.O.S update (Your Help Is Needed)
      Jul 01, 2008 01:39:33 am
Latest update from Spirit of Shankly folks.

      S.O.S Update

Just a quick update on where we are at the moment with regards to membership packs, the website and online joining, and some other events that we have planned.

      1. Membership Packs

All members who had joined before 12th June 2008, have now had their Membership Packs sent out and these should be with you shortly. In the pack is your joining letter, membership card, and Spirit Of Shankly pin badge. Please sign your card when it arrives. If there are any queries or problems, please email admin@spiritofshankly.com, with the subject header, Membership Packs, and we will deal with them for you.

All members who have joined after 12th June 2008 are having their memberships processed and membership packs will be sent out shortly.

      2. Website and Online Joining

The website is currently being finalised and will be launched in the next ten days. Once we have the exact date, this will be publicised. As soon as the website is live, you will be able to join Spirit Of Shankly online. We know there has been a long delay in getting this up and running and we apologise for that. It was a number of unforeseen events that kept pushing back the website being launched, along with the online memberships.

      3. Joining Now

If people want to join now, before it goes online, they still can. Go to http://www.spiritofshankly.com and download our Membership Application Form (It is currently the old one, as the new one is being edited and needs to be uploaded. Either of the forms are acceptable). All you need to do is then send it off to the address on the application form, enclose your cheque, postal order (made payable to Liverpool Supporters Union) or cash if you wish, and send it off. If you have friends, family who want to join, pass the membership form to them as well. Alternatively you can go into EDT on Great Homer Street (near to the NSPCC building) and join. We will soon have a drop off point for memberships in a number of locations around Anfield.

      4. Other Events

We will be giving out some information shortly on a Sportsmans Evening that we are holding, as well as details on our first coach, for the pre-season friendly against Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox. The details for both will be released shortly.

I read that the Sportsmans evening/benefit night
may be on Sat June 15th, Brian Reade is rumoured to be one of the guests,  though I'm sure SOS will release the full details soon enough.

I'll update this post if anyone's interested.

This lad Andy G posted these questions on a few forums I visit, since they are the kind of questions you all might ask, I thought I’d post them and Spirit of Shankly’s reply.

Please can someone from SOS guide me on the following:

I am aware from previous posts that only members are privvy to accounts and decisions on spending money and no problem with that, I am also aware that a cheque has been received by Anne Williams and I thank SOS for that, but would like to know the following before I join:

1). Is SOS or RTK a profit making organisation in itself and if so where do the profits go?

2). Where SOS are organising things for fans benefits, will it be made clear if SOS as a group or any of it's members will profit from such deals? I think no one has a problem with this happening on particular issues, but just a bit of transparancy is required.

With Question 2 for example, if someone organises SOS/RTK coaches for supporters, the organisers should travel free themselves or make some profit for the work they put in and no problem with this. Everyone wins because the SOS members get cheaper travel etc., it should just be made clear from the start.

3). How will decisions on spending money be made

4). Will the accounts be made available to all members?

No reasons for my questions except for experience in other organisational matters.

I will link this thread to the other websites [TLW, OTK, RAWK, RAOTL] so that anyone else with who might be interested gets to see what they are signing up for.

      Cheers for your help.

      Andy

Official S.O.S reply by the finance committee chairman.

      1. SOS is constituted as an Industrial Provident Society and registered with the Financial Services Authority. As such, the organisation must generate a surplus (AKA "profit") in order to remain solvent and continue to legally exist. However, none of these surpluses are to be distributed to members in the form of dividends (as would happen in a "normal" limited company). In this sense the organisation can rightly be termed "not for profit".

Money generated may only be spent in furthering the objects of the union, as set out in the constitution - available to all members and filed at the Financial Services Authority. In order to ensure that this happens there are two levels of scrutiny. Firstly, expenditure has to be signed off be two members of the Management Committee. After this, the Finance Committee is requested to process the payment, with two members of the Committee being required to ensure payments are signed off by the Mangement Committee and then subsequently sign the cheque for payment. In order to ensure independence and seperation of duties, the Finance Committee members would not ordinarily be members of the Management Committee (However, until the AGM, a member of the Finance Committee is temporarily acting as Vice Chair of the Union). It seems a bit complicated, but it works, spreads responsibility and ensures that spending is scrutinised by an independent body (with two qualified accountants on it).

      2. Regarding members "profiting" from "deals", where members submit the best priced quote for a particular job, then provided an interest is declared they are allowed to receive "reasonable" payment. In practice, the members are actually providing services at little or no cost; e.g the constitution was drafted and submitted for free (saved thousands of pounds), the website is being produced at much less than cost price (saved thousands of pounds), the members involved in organising the End Of Season Night all paid for tickets (even one of the main organisers who was stuck in Pontins and couldn't get to the Olympia!) The only people who may get free travel on the coaches will be the stewards (and that is still to be decided), and they will be picked on the basis of ability to do the job.

Rest assured that ever penny spent from union funds is scrutinised in minute detail - no-one will be profiteering.

      3. Answered above, and as governed by our constitution.

      4. As an IPS, the union is legally bound to make its accounts public. In fact, one of the tasks we discussed at tonight's Finance Committee was the appointment of external auditors to verify the accuracy and completeness of the accounts. All accounts, the constitution, and details of Management Committee membership will be filed with the Financial Services Authority and available for public scrutiny.

In addition to the above, we are preparing arrangements for an AGM - as agreed when we first established the existing Management Committee - and this will give any bona fide member the opportunity to stand for election to the Mangement Committee. The election will be managed by an independent third party (probably the Electoral Reform Society) and we will be looking at using our soon to be launched website for online nominations and, if possible, online voting for non-local members

Hope that can answer a few of your own questions like, till the next time YNWA-SOS

The latest statement from Spirit of Shankly:

“Belong". The motto for Liverpool Football Club's new Membership Scheme. Well what if you already 'Belong'? Do you have to cough up £29 or £20, to continue to belong? Or can you still belong, but anyone new who wants to belong, has to pay for the privilege?

The whole idea of someone belonging to a club is fair and right. But to pay for it, where is the fairness in that? We all belong to Liverpool Football Club. From the minute you were born and had your first picture taken with a Liverpool scarf. Or from when your Dad, Mum, Aunty, Uncle, Cousin, started taking you to the match or when you watched MOTD and realised there was only one club for you. The point is, you didn't start belonging, when you paid YOUR club, a certain amount of money, a membership fee, each year. So why is Liverpool Football Club, a religion to most fans, now charging for you to 'Belong'?

The "benefits" of this new scheme mean improved access to tickets, in the form of a Ticket Exchange. What about existing fan card holders? Do we have improved access to tickets, such as Window Sales, an Improved Internet service for buying tickets online, or an improved telephone system for buying tickets? How much access do fans get to tickets via this exchange for their fee? Will those subscribing to the new Membership Scheme receive any priority over existing fan card holders? How will the PTS scheme be affected? Will they still have the same number of tickets available to them?

For your £29 membership fee, you can join the Season Ticket Waiting List.  A list that up until this point was free to join. Can people still join the waiting list for free, or do you have to pay to join it? If so what about all those fans presently on the waiting list, what happens to them?

This Membership, is replacing fan cards. You can no longer buy a £3.50 fan card. So any new fans that previously weren't able to go to the match and haven't got a fan card have to pay £29 a season if they want to realistically even consider going to a game, young kids wanting to start going to games, have got to pay £20 a season. This is just for the CHANCE of a ticket, to be able to record loyalty. Existing fan card holders – well no one seems to be willing to say what exactly will happen to them. What we do know is that an S.O.S Committee Member contacted the Ticket Office about this proposed scheme a few weeks ago. We were told that fan cards would be ok for the 2008/09 season, but not for the 2009/10 season. So what happens to fan card holders then? A card that was described as being the only card you will ever need, is it now going to be rendered useless? They said so. It means everyone has to cough up to stand a chance of getting a ticket. Have they decided sensibly against this? Have they any intention of informing us?

The Club’s very own charter says this about fancards:

“The Fan Card is the only card that you will need with Liverpool Football Club”

      http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/club/charter.htm
See the section on fan cards. It tells you this. So why the change?

Did the club consult with supporters? If it has – and in the charter it claims to on a regular basis – then can it release the minutes of those discussions? Do you know of anyone who has taken part in them on this issue? If it hasn’t consulted with supporters, well, why not? We’re the ones who go through the ticketing rigmarole week in, week out. We’re the ones frustrated by the ticket office, by losing tickets to touts. Is it in any way arduous to actually remember simple values of customer service or to carry out surveys? The club calls upon the twelfth man when it requires it and then casts him aside from its thoughts other than as a minor irritant to be bled dry at all other times.

What about Season Ticket Holders? They currently pay a minimum of £650 per season. Do they get the same benefits of this new membership? Will the receive the discounts and the special offers?

There are so many questions that the club need to answer. So many questions that we, as fans, need answers to. We will be asking the club for these answers, a letter has been sent to Rick Parry, and to the Ticket Office Manager, asking for answers to all these questions.

The only answer we have for definite is cost. £29 for adults, £20 for children. Per season. So a family of 4 must pay £98. Per Season. Just to give themselves a chance of getting a ticket in a season. A young supporter, living in the shadows of Anfield, who might want to attend just one game, as they can't afford it regularly, now has to pay £20, just for the 'privilege' of applying for a ticket. This is even before fans have to consider the rises in ticket prices, of £3 per ticket, per game.

From a one off payment of £3.50 to £29 per season. With an estimated
250,000 people holding fan cards, that is £7,250,000 extra revenue per season.
The cynic in us, might wonder exactly where that money will be going.

This isn't like Barcelona, where they have members, who pay their money and have a say. This is pay your money, maybe get a ticket to take your seat and be happy with it.

We have also learnt today, that the Development Association, who provide tickets to fans (which they pay for) who sell pools on behalf of the club (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/tickets/devassoc/ ), are to lose their allocation of tickets. Supporters Clubs, many of whom have fans who come every week from all over the country, are to have their ticket allocations cut in half. Where will these tickets go? To Corporates. So less tickets for fans who go every week, everywhere. More tickets for those who swell the clubs coffers, and want to turn up for a “jolly good afternoon of sport”.

So we will ask the questions. We will get the answers. And we’ll help the club do what it seems to find so hard – tell supporters what is going on. But in the meantime, why don’t you ask the club. Or if the club ignore us, let’s ask the Liverpool Echo to ask questions on our behalf. Email Tony Barrett - tony.barrett@liverpoolecho.co.uk. Lets put pressure on them to ask questions to those who make these decisions, and lets pressure the club in to answering OUR questions.

£20 each for your kids and £29 pound for you mate, every year. Just for a glorified Official Liverpool Supporters Club membership and a ticket exchange, except the OLSC does'nt exist anymore in stead is this new £29 Liverpool FC "Official Membership" see how they dropped the Supporters bit from it ?

I am angry at the clubs new Membership Scheme, which has created more questions in my head than it has provide me with any useful information. It seems to me to be another money making intiative. Have to say, the first time I heard of this new 'membership' thing I was disgusted. And I still am.

First of all there's no justification of the price. Second of all it seems as though the idea of it has been thrown together in five minutes with no real emphasis of fans having an equal chance of watching the game. And most importantly, the notion of having to pay to 'belong'.

Thanks again for the updates Kingjari.

I've always said that those two tw*ts won't stop me supporting my team, because that's why we go the match, we go to support our heroes, not to line the pockets of two greedy american cu*ts, but I can't afford to go anymore. The problem is, despite there being a few hundred probably being unable to renknew their season tickets this year, Anfield WILL always be sold out because "daytrippers" or "plazy fans" or whatever you wish to call them will buy the tickets. And it's these "fans" who will give the yanks more money because the way we'd buy A programme, somebody from Thailand for example would buy 30 and give one to every person in their street and one framed on the fridge. The yanks must know this, bit funny how we're possibly the biggest name around the world and they want the name spread more, just so more people become "fans" and give them their money.

Getting back to S.O.S I think they do a brilliant job BUT they really do need to make things more accesable to fans. Too many things go under the radar of joe public and there's too much secrecy. It's something commonly said in households and alehouses around the city, as well as forum's like this. For example that protest with the eviction orders for Tom and Jerry, I heard about it through a PM on here or newkit, can't quite remember but it said I've got to keep quiet about it. Well I assume that at least 98% of Liverpool fans (genuine fans that is who have the interest of the club at heart) want Hicks and Gillett out so those 98% should of had access to knowing about the protest. Not wanting to alert the bizzies I can understand but I'm sure there's Liverpool fans who are coppers who feel as strongly about it as me and you who'd of happily stood shoulder to shoulder shouting yanks out. I know people involved with the S.O.S will continue to talk about the website not being up and running yet, but surely someone involved has access to a pen and paper and can write a quick summary of what's gonna be coming up in recent weeks, he/she can then hand it to the computer literate one who types it up properly, prints about 2000 copies and they're handed out either round town or the club shop at Anfield. Every week/fornight/month whatever time scale, just have a newsletter, let people know via forums like this or radio city/merseyside or even the clubs official site if need be, and say "the weekly newsletter concerning S.O.S will be in the club shop at Anfield from 6PM every Monday and are free to obtain" That way fans know where to get the newsletter, when and know what's happening with the S.O.S. Something along those lines would be a huge benifit esepcially from the club shop because how many non Liverpool fans will go into the club shop? Just one idea of helping spread the events over a wider net.

Sorry I meant RAOTL, just wondering.

Can I ask, why was the decision made to have an off the pitch child board ?

Its not like they were swamping the main board.

Am I meant to post any S.O.S updates in here now like ? or still in the Kop board ?.

To be honest, I feel that any S.O.S messages, which are relavant to all libpool fans, would not be seen as much as they should hidden away in this board.

On the contrary - not hidden away at all.  We felt some of these issues deserved their own board.

RAWK has the Hillsborough campaign as a child board.

This board has now been moved to a main board.

Didn't think they were being hidden away, its an honour to have your own board  ;)  Just easier to find keeping all the campaigns together.

Im very Sorry guys did'nt mean to cause any offence like.
Its just on RAOTL there was a very vigorous debate about how we felt  important topics like the Liverpool Supporters Union, HJC, & the Bob Paisley campaign being marginalised in RAWK's off the pitch board.

Fair play one of RAWK's  staff even came on to address the issue. Which I understand was sorted.

So far there are dedicated Liverpool Supporters Union  boards on RAOTL & YNWA, and RAWK also consider their OTP board as effectively an SOS one.
Since almost all off the pitch issues fall under the Unions remit.

I understand and agree with your point about having all the campaigns together in this board. Reclaim The Kop,
The HJC, Hope for Hillsborough,  Ray of Hope and Bob Paisley Memoriel Camplaign all work closely with the Union
Personally, I also feel that the Share Liverpool FC and AFC Liverpool initiatives, while they aren't yet formally linked to the Union. They are defo undertaken  IN the Spirit Of Shankly. Its appropriate that they share the same board.

I was just worried about visabillity and the possible effect on how many members and guests of the forum would see these very important issues.

Smigger, your right it is an honour that we have our own board. The Albert is a great name for it, but any chance you could call it the Spirit of Shankly instead please, with the SOS crest ? ;-)
Or is that a little too cheeky ?

Many thanks JD for making it a more visible main board, changing it so quickly and for your co-operation on several matters recently.
Your support of the Union cause is brilliant.
