      Youngster can’t believe it
      July 4, 2008
One of Germany’s top teenage talents Christopher Buchtmann can’t believe that he has signed for Liverpool.

The 16-year-old young midfielder, had been recruited from Borussia Dortmund’s youth system last month.

He told RevierSport of the pride he feels to be officially on the books at Liverpool, and said he wanted to join Liverpool when he was attending a League Cup clash featuring Liverpool against Cardiff last season.

“When the fans start to sing, you do not know what to say,” he said.

“I want to spend some time at Anfield. Apparently Steven Gerrard sometimes visits the junior games and talks with the players,” he added.

“My whole life I have had enough English to survive, but if I had known I would need a Liverpudlian accent, I would probably have been more attentive at school!”

      Buchtmann makes Germany breakthrough
Christopher Buchtmann picked a good time to score his first international goal on Wednesday night – putting Germany ahead on their way to a 3-1 victory against Turkey in their opening game as UEFA European Under-17 Championship hosts.

      Good feeling
Germany trailed early on but immediately equalised, and Buchtmann pounced on a loose ball eleven minutes into the second half to give his team the advantage in Erfurt before sending in the corner from which Shkodran Mustafi headed the clincher. "It is my first goal for Germany," Buchtmann told uefa.com. "I felt great about that."

      Support
More than 5,000 people were in the Steigerwaldstadion to salute Buchtmann's goal, one of the biggest crowds for any U17 finals fixture. The midfielder certainly appreciated the support. "It was very good to play in front of so many people," he said, and added: "It is a good start to the tournament, it gives us a lot of confidence. We were very nervous at the start but we got better and better and we showed what we can do. We will do all what we can to win the tournament."

      England encounter
They will be a step closer if they beat England in Jena on Saturday to confirm a semi-final berth with a game to spare, and having joined Liverpool FC from BV Borussia Dortmund last year, the fixture has special resonance for Buchtmann. "We are looking forward to playing England," he said. "I play for Liverpool, so it's great to play against them."

We've been bringing in some 'raw' talent the past couple of seasons but I have not heard back any glamourous reports.  Infact, I haven't heard any.

Remember that lad that was quoted to be the next Messi?  Or even Daniel Pacheo?  Are these lads hiding in the dark because I haven't heard much about them since joining!

And what ever happened to Craig Lindfield?!?

This fella sounds like something special, and on the left wing. Is he left footed or just played on the left. If he's left footed, added little bonus. Feet on the ground time now, level head and go all the way. Look forward to watching him.

Yeah plays left back for us but that's no harm at all. It will strengthen the defensive side of his game and he could become the complete player because of it.

5 years time Insua overlapping Buchtmann in games causing havoc on the left could be a regular occurrence

Germany one two-nil, he wasn't outstanding today, he was quieter than in previous games, he was playing in a free role, but still looked quality, he nearly scored at the end.

No wasn't particularly outstanding.Agreed, but he has a good eye for a pass and can really deliver crosses can't he? Reminded me of Xabi today with some of his passes...

Ya he doesn't waste possession and is easily Germanys most creative player. He has a great left foot on him, hope to see him in the reserves next season, he still needs to improve the physical side of his game but that will come. A good prospect for the future.

      Anyone watch it then?

      Reds star becomes European Champion
Chris Buchtmann has been crowned a European champion after Germany claimed a dramatic extra-time victory in the final of the UEFA European Under-17 Championships this afternoon.
The Academy star played the majority of his country's clash with Holland in Magdeburg and added another assist to his tournament quota as they came from behind to secure a narrow 2-1 triumph.

The Dutch had taken a shock lead through Luc Castaignos' seventh minute drive but a sublime left-wing free-kick from Buchtmann on 34 minutes created the opening for Lennart Thy to equalise after Kevin Scheidhauer had hit the bar.

A keenly contested second period ensued but neither side could make the breakthrough and after being booked in the opening minute of extra-time Buchtmann was substituted.

However, Germany continued to press and the Liverpool star was quick to join the celebrations after Florian Trinks' sensational free-kick three minutes from time won the cup for the hosts.

Well played to the lad.  From what I've seen he looks a pretty decent prospect.

I watch the young kids on LFC tv and we have a team full of talent, most youth players never used to make it to the pro game, but I'm betting a lot of the youth we have, do make it, maybe a few will stay here, fingers crossed for them, but whatever happens most of the present squad will make the grade somewhere.......

Overall he had a good tournament. Comfortable with ball on hist feet, excellent crosser of ball, has a decent right foot and is not afraid of taking on people. He needs to improve his shooting and physical strength. Great prospect...I can wait for two years...fingers crossed...

UEFA have named Academy ace Christopher Buchtmann as one of their top 10 stars of the future.
The left-back, who turned 17 last month, was one of the standout performers as Germany clinched the European U17 Championship on Monday.

Buchtmann has also impressed in helping Liverpool Under-18s reach the FA Youth Cup final.

The official UEFA list is as follows:

Patrick ter Mate (Netherlands) - Vitesse/AGOVV Academy Cutodian
Janick Kamber (Switzerland) - FC Basel 1893
Marc Muniesa (Spain) - FC Barcelona
Dennis Appiah (France) - AS Monaco
Marco Fossati (Italy) - FC Internazionale
Deniz Herber (Turkey) - FC St. Pauli
      Christopher Buchtmann (Germany) - Liverpool
      Jack Wilshere (England) - Arsenal
Lennart Thy (Germany) - Werder Bremen
      Luc Castaignos (Netherlands) - Feyenoord
Didn't know he's a left back... Well, I really can't wait to see him play for us. Saw a couple of his games for Germany u-17 and looks like a great prospect.

He is a predominantly left mid field player. Although official site says that he comfortable playing as a left back. Anyways, in U-17 championship he played as a left winger.

He's playing at the moment in the Under-17 World Cup for Germany - I'm watching a repeat of a game played on October 30th.

He looks pretty nifty to be honest, the first time I've seen him play. Certainly looks to be a Liverpool-type player, as we've been discussing on another thread.

Aggressive, willing to track back and chase down every ball. Got some decent skills on him and looks very lively, a good prospect.

I imagine he'll be playing tonight in Germany's last-16 match against Switzerland, so all the best to him!

German teenager Christopher Buchtmann moves from Liverpool FC to Fulham

LIVERPOOL have agreed a deal to sell young left-back Christopher Buchtmann to Fulham for ÂŁ100,000.

The 17-year-old German joined the Reds’ Academy in 2008 after making the switch from Borussia Dortmund.

Buchtmann was part of the Reds team who reached last season’s FA Youth Cup final and last summer he played a starring role in Germany’s European Under-17 Championship triumph. He was named among UEFA’s top 10 stars of the future.

However, after being promoted to Melwood he has struggled to impress this season and has been off-loaded to the Cottagers.

      Buchtmann heads to Cologne

Fulham youngster Christopher Buchtmann has returned to Germany to join Cologne on a three-year contract.

Buchtmann only moved to Fulham from Liverpool during the January transfer window, but failed to make a first-team appearance for Roy Hodgson's side.

The teenage midfielder has now accepted a move to Cologne and the Bundesliga club's general manager Michael Meier is happy to have signed a player of such promise.

"We are very pleased that we were able, after long negotiations, to complete the transfer of Christopher Buchtmann, especially since there were some rivals from the Bundesliga," Meier told the club's official website.

"Christopher is a promising player. He gained some experience with Fulham and he has also been successful with the German youth teams.

"Christopher Buchtmann is a versatile player who can be used in midfield defensively and offensively

That was exactly what I meant by attitude problems. He isn't even 18 years old and if lack of first team opportunity is the reason of him changing 2 clubs in span of 5 months, then certainly the lad has some serious attitude problems.

Ever thought he may have just wanted to return to Germany. Think of it this way. Imagine you went to Germany at the age of 16. That would be very difficult for someone so young.
