      The final chance for medals for GB is in the women's modern pentathlon.  After the fencing and swimming, world champion Mhairi Spence and Sam Murray lie in 9th and 3rd positions respectively.

      Fency Spency has a poor show-jumping round racking up over 100 penalties.  Her horse gave her a lot of trouble!  Doesn't give her much of a chance in the combined shooting and running final rounds unless the women above her also do badly.  She lies in 14th place and starts 30 seconds behind the leader.

      Sam Murray picks up 60 penalty points and goes into the final combination round in 4th place and starts 8 seconds behind the current leader.

      Silver medal to finish off our medals haul! I hear all our medallists will be given a parade around London. We may need quite a few double decker buses!

      Gutted it's all nearly over. In a country where we are far too obsessive over our failing players and national teams in football we've just been given a hefty reminder that greatness for Great Britain lies elsewhere. Third in the medals table. We're 9th in the table per million population which is mind boggling considering our population dominates those in and around us. The first country who dominate us in terms of population is Russia way down in 25th place (got well over twice the population of the UK).

      http://simon.forsyth.net/olympics.html

      So technically going by that table we are a better nation at sports than Russia, China and the US combined. It's not as if we didn't know that anyway! :D

      We started off with a silver medal thanks to Lizzie Armistead's great effort in the road race and we finished off with a silver as a result of Sam Murray!

      And a few other medals in between!

      Well done to Sam Murray.  :clap:

      For some reason, I thought we would miss out on a medal in the modern pentathlon, but I should have known better really.

      Fantastic Olympics for GB's athletes. Well done to all of the medallists!

      65 medals in total, 29 of which were gold!

      65!!!

      Smashed the amazing Beijing effort!

      Well done to all our athletes and all the competitors, so many incredible performances!  I've really enjoyed every second of these games.

      Looking forward to what the closing ceremony brings now!

      Here's a poem published by poet laureate Carol-Ann Duffy in commemoration of Great Britain's athletes.

      Translating the British, 2012

      A summer of rain, then a gap in the clouds

      and The Queen jumped from the sky

      to the cheering crowds.

      We speak Shakespeare here,

      a hundred tongues, one-voiced; the moon bronze or silver,

      sun gold, from Cardiff to Edinburgh

      by way of London Town,

      on the Giant's Causeway;

      we say we want to be who we truly are,

      now, we roar it. Welcome to us.

      We've had our pockets picked,

      the soft, white hands of bankers,

      bold as brass, filching our gold, our silver;

      we want it back.

      We are Mo Farah lifting the 10,000 metres gold.

      We want new running-tracks in his name.

      For Jessica Ennis, the same; for the Brownlee brothers,

      Rutherford, Ohuruogu, Whitlock, Tweddle,

      for every medal earned,

      we want school playing fields returned.

      Enough of the soundbite abstract nouns,

      austerity, policy, legacy, of tightening metaphorical belts;

      we got on our real bikes,

      for we are Bradley Wiggins,

      side-burned, Mod, god;

      we are Sir Chris Hoy,

      Laura Trott, Victoria Pendleton, Kenny, Hindes,

      Clancy, Burke, Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas,

      Olympian names.

      We want more cycle lanes.

      Or we saddled our steed,

      or we paddled our own canoe,

      or we rowed in an eight or a four or a two;

      our names, Glover and Stanning; Baillie and Stott;

      Adlington, Ainslie, Wilson, Murray,

      Valegro (Dujardin's horse).

      We saw what we did. We are Nicola Adams and Jade Jones,

      bring on the fighting kids.

      We sense new weather.

      Judging by some of the music on show this evening (Jessie J? One Direction? Seriously?) I am definitely more a sports enthusiast than a music fan! I mean come on! A 30 second montage of David Bowie yet we get 5 minutes of torture from Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and someone Cruz?! Why?!!! At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if John Terry came on and extinguished the Olympic flame with his own piss.

      Absolutely loved that bit. Eric Idle you legend! I would have loved Michael Palin and John Cleese to make an appearance as well...but no we got Jessie J again this time pissing on the grave of Freddie Mercury who has shown that he can entertain more people in death than Jessie J can in life.

      Oh it's PELE!! Now he IS something!

      Well in Seb Coe. Great speech from a great man. London would never have got the games without his effort. A legend not just on the track but now off it.
