A NEW square dedicated to The Beatles is being officially unveiled in Hamburg.
The Beatles Platz – believed to be the first square in the world named after the band – will be opened by the Mayor of Hamburg at a special ceremony on September 11.
The event is the culmination of a seven-year campaign to honour the Fab Four.
They honed their music skills in the clubs of the St Pauli district of the German port city.
Half the 550,000 Euro (£440,000) cost of the project was met by the city of Hamburg with the rest coming from donations from all over the world.
Work started at the end of May on creating the new square on the Reeperbahn at the corner with Grosse Freiheit, near the former Star Club where the Beatles played.
The design, by Hamburg architects Carsten Dohse and Francis Stitch, features a 90ft diameter granite “record”.
In the grooves between the granite slabs are stainless steel bands engraved with 70 Beatles song titles while sunken square lamps give the impression of a rotating turntable.
The square will also be home to a statue of the band.
Those bloody Germans have got one over us again.
Do you think Liverpool should have big statue of the fab four.
