World To End On Wednesday (tomorrow)

I don't mean to scare anyone 

At school today I heard people saying that the world is going to end on Wednesday so I decided to have a look on google because I would at least want to prepare myself the best I can. I would have thought some of you lot would have heard something about it too but I will try and reassure you anyway

This is probably the best thing I could actually find:

This Wednesday the most advanced scientific instrument ever built will be switched on in Geneva.

It was originally due to be turned on a couple of weeks ago but was put back, rumour has it, due to Andrew Marr being on holiday and the request that he cover the story for the BBC to maximize the media attention.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been built to test current theories for particle physics and scientists will try and recreate the conditions that existed just after the Big Bang by smashing parts of atoms together at high speeds.

When activated the collider could show one of the most elusive particles in our Universe, the Higgs boson, also called the "God particle". This observation could confirm the Standard Model of physics unifying three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out just gravity.

However, other more dangerous particles will also be produced for which searches are planned, such as black holes, and never seen before particles of matter, and even now, the architects of what is being termed a "Doomsday" machine, the U.S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, the National Science Foundation and CERN are being sued in federal court over fears that this experiment may in fact destroy the planet.

I thought this did'nt give too much informaion on the whole thing although I did find the bit I have highlighted quite amusing. If the planet is destoryed then suing them wont exactly do much good

They are doing the eperiment because they are trying to explain the 'big bang theory' or something (quite hard to understand when they put all the big fancy words in)

I saw 'CERN' in the aticle so I looked them up on google and I have jus posted the link instead of an article because there are so many and there are quite a few diagrams so it would be easier for you to just take a look.

IMO it is just a load of bollocks because why would they risk the entire planet on something they don't have to do? 

If any of you are worrying about it then I hope looking at the 'CERN' website will put your fears to rest (no pun intended). They appear to know what they are doing and they have even written an article reiterating the safety of the experiment.

Also, and this is the part which actually convinced me altogether that it will be ok; A quote from a certain Steven Hawking

Professor Stephen Hawking, author of A Brief History of Time, said: "Collisions at these and greater energies occur millions of times a day in the Earth’s atmosphere, and nothing terrible happens."

Both my dad and brother has worked on CERN, and I know a little about it as well, and it seems to me that this "world ends on wednesday"-theory is just as much bullshit as the stuff you read in the newspapers during transfer-windows. Media hyped up because it   sells.

I've heard the Hawking quote earlier also, and physicists I know agree. Those collisions occur because particles from outer space collides with the atmosphere at extreme velocities. And they have done that ever since this planet has existed, and nothing has happened there. I also think that the experiments that have been going on at CERN before they build this LHC ring, also had a small, small probability of creating these black holes. The probability is just slightly bigger now, since the particles in the LHC have higher energy. So I dont think its actually any new thing. Just some people who got aware of it and told the press, in order to get famous.

Anyway, even if Im wrong, then the world will not end tomorrow, because they only turn the machine on tomorrow. Only later they will start colliding particles in there, and thats what people are afraid of.

Whilst I don't think the world will end this morning (fingers crossed!  ), scientists have actually done experiments in the past where they believed they might actually destroy the planet.

The Manhattan Project during the Second World War led to the creation of the first atom bomb. Prior to the detonation (codenamed Trinity), the scientists had a little lottery between themselves to guess what would happen (quote from Wiki):

The observers set up betting pools on the results of the test. Predictions ranged from zero, a complete dud, to 18 kilotons of TNT, to destruction of the state of New Mexico, to ignition of the atmosphere and incineration of the entire planet. This last result had been calculated to be almost impossible, although for a while it caused some of the scientists some anxiety.

Whilst it sounds a bit X-Files, you should never underestimate the stupidity of the US Government!

Awoke today to announce to my Mrs that this morning the big bang would take place only to be told ‘don’t flatter yourself', so with that in mind.

1. Wash the dishes yourself love, and Im not hanging any washing out.
2. I won’t be returning my book Social etiquette by Joey Barton to the library.
3. The provident man can go and swing for his £200 interest on a £50 loan!
4.I have released all our pets into the wild although granted I don’t know how long a cyclet from the waters of the Amazon will last in a toilet with blue loo in it.
5. To my friends on the forum, I never liked you anyway and I am in fact a deluded Scunthorpe fan just looking for someone to chat with.
6. To Sharon my girlfriend when I was sixteen I was seeing your mate behind your back and to be honest me and Robert remain good friends to this day.
7. To my boss I bloody hate this job and have subsidised my wage by downloading films for the Chinese to flog round pubs.

The first couple of months after todays switch on will be used purely for training the machine and getting the particles whizzing in straight lines - THEN they'll start letting them hit each other, but only a little bit at a time. We won't get the really big collisions for at least a year, maybe two.
