Selling my car - what do I do with my insurance?

I'm selling my car the end of this month.

The new person doesn't need the road tax disc for some reason so I know I can claim back full unused months on that.

But what about the car insurance?  I got a new policy in April and I paid for it all in one go.  Do I get some of it back, or is it just tough titty?

I thought that if you changed your car then you just phone your insurance company and change the details. i.e. the make and model of your new car etc.

my better half informs me that if you phone your insurance company they should calculate the cost of a short term policy from the day you took it out to the day you cancel. They deduct this from what you paid and refund the difference to you providing you haven't made a claim during the period you have used.

I think you get a refund of any monies you've paid pro-rata 

Cheers.  I think my policy was about £250 so it's prob at least £100 back then.

I'm borrowing somebody else's car for 6 months because there going on a stupid long holiday, so I will be a named driver on that so won't need my own insurance, otherwise I would normally transfer it over to another car.

Your insurance company can put a hold on your policy, so when you do get another car the cost will then be taken of your new one policy.
You get more that way, than just cashing it in.

Rang insurance company, they just refunded what the unused part of my car insurance, and today sent off my tax disc.

Pretty straightforward so there, now you all know if you're ever in the same boat.
