I bought one from Tesco Direct just before Xmas.  Paid £350 and it's fine - I'm using it now.

If you want to go for a really high spec one I can't help you but Tescos is fine for a decent one for the price.

      What's it for? Gaming? Work?

You won't want one with high specs if it's just for work, but if it's for gaming then you will.

      Gaming costs.

And if it's for browsing the net I wouldn't look past a netbook at the moment.

you cant go wrong with the specs out there  even on a four hundred pound machine                                                                                                               > i would say go to comet digital and check the asthetics of machines and weigh them         i think its a mistake to buy a seventeen incher off the net when you get it home it weighs in like a boxer and is bigger than an american

One of my friends just got a new netbook :Samsung NC10 for about 200 euros (some offer).

A great netbook even at the actual price (around 300 euros). Battery life of about 6.5 hours WITH FM 09. The problem is that you cannot play FM on it because the max resolution it supports is less than the requirement of FM 09. The way around that is to connect it to an external monitor.

It really does depend on what you need it for, and how much you will need to use it.
In any case, I recommend one of the older MacBooks, they're cheaper than the new ones, and they are still brilliant.

I would seriously recommend trying NOVATECH laptops!

I have one I bought 2 years ago for £450, as a gaming laptop, and it runs most games now, they're cheap and reliable. Try them out!

[just don't spill vodka on the keyboard like I did, I now have to use a USB keyboard :(     GUTTED!!]

I got a Toshiba Satellite..Centrino Core 2 Duo,320 GB HD, 3 GB memory,DVD-DL, 15.4" screen and has Wireless B,G and N. N Wireless is what you need for Online Gaming.

The only problem with it is it came with Vista instead of XP. However, other than that it's awesome.  I know people who paid twice what I did for a DELL or Sony and the Toshiba is awesome..I paid $649.00 US.  Every person I know who has a Toshiba said it was the best they ever had.
