Best videogame of all time?

I'm old school and these games gave me countless hours of joy;
- Dungeon Keeper (PC) - still play it
- Championship Manager 2 (PC)
- Diablo series (PC)
- Sonic The Hedgehog series (Megadrive)
- Super Mario Bros. series (NES)

Newer ones;
- Ico (PS2)
- Metal Gear Solid series (PS1 & PS2)
- God Of War series (PS2)
- Evil Genius (PC)
- Neverwinter Nights (PC)

I forgot to mention Lemmings 2: The Tribes, one of the best puzzlers of all time.  And on a very Retro note, Footballer Of The Year on the Spectrum as well as Elite are worthy mentions for their generation.   

Forgot to include 'Contra' on the NES. Still remember the theme music. Awesome!

And IMO, the Megadrive is one of the top three consoles of all time.

On platforms I've owned.

Amstrad:

Gauntlet, so addictive and basic but awesome.

PC:

Command and Conquer, a defining game which was truly amazing and set the precedent for any war game available.

Mega Drive:

Sonic 2 or Fifa 95.

PS1:

MGS, FF7 and Fifa 98; remember the bendy arrow for corners where you could score, fouling the keeper too!!!

Xbox:

Halo - hands down, my favourite game ever.

PS2:

PES3 defined football games as they are now for me.

Xbox 360:

Halo 3 or Guitar Hero 3.

PS3:

Fifa 10 or COD6.

Overall it is split for me between Final Fantasy 7 and Halo, both are games I constantly go back to. Oh and Star wars knights of the round table was thoroughly enjoyable too.

Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3

The storyline, gameplay, online - it's just an epic game
Perfect game for Snake's last mission

of late - batman arkham asylum

Gotta be Fallout 2 for the pc an oldie but a goody if your into that sort of game

Alastair, I wouldn't say COD6 should be in anyones list. It's good and all but not the best game of all time.

Killzone 2 on the PS3 blew me away. I can't remember whether it was Vice City or San Andreas on the PS2 I preferred most but they were both great.

Goldeneye and Mario Kart for the N64 come to mind. More recently, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2.

Can never say COD or GTA even though I thought San Andreas was immense. GTA IV was a massive disappointment I felt.

However I can confidently say that the best game I have ever played was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. One word describes that game - wow.

Any Super Mario or Donkey Kong. Classics.

Rome: Total war - Best strategy game of all time

GTA: San Andreas - Revolutionery for its time and best GTA game ever

COD: Modern Warfare - Set the bench mark for all online play

I thought Ocarina of Time was amazing, but I think I am going to go with Goldeneye.

Oh, and Broken Sword! Anyone remember that? It was a great post pub game or hangover remedy!

First-Person shooters were my babies when I was younger.

Unreal Tournament - The original, and for me, my favorite game of all-time. Definitely not the best, but it holds a special place in my heart for its fast-paced murderous action. Online community was huge and competitive, and so were the gaming ladders. I may have to pop this back in to my desktop and try it again, it never got old for me, I just went away to school and had to stop.

Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare - So good. Not much else needs to be said.

Those were the two games I was most addicted to as a teenager and then in school. Mario Kart and Super Mario World on SNES were amazing as well.

Rome: Total war - Best strategy game of all time

Good call the TW games are awesome, Rome especially.

I played TES4: Oblivion to death, but mainly because of the modding community. I loved Gun (on PS2 and PC I think) as well. It's a free roam Western, bit like an older version of Red Dead Redemption. The first Mercenaries on PS2 also had me playing for ages, as did Freelancer on the PC. I think I put more hours into that game than any other. Have to mention Mass Effect 2 (and to a lesser extent 1) as well, just for it's overall awesomeness.

And I agree with those mentioning the N64, it had some great games.

Somehow forgot to mention Half Life 2, which has to be one of the greatest shooters of all time. Deus Ex is also widely regarded as one of the best games ever, and more importantly there's a new one out in 2011 which is one of the most exciting up and coming releases.

Cant decide for story line, but for online Call of Duty (4) MW.

I see some mentioning Silent hill as a scary game .... never played it...what all happend in it?

Remember when I was young every 2 weeks my mum would of rented me a new game...ahh I remember the time me and freinds would actually play the game and get into the story line not just to get a good K:D Ratio online ;/
