Pretty sure the vast hardcore Star Wars fans didn't like it because of the risks taken, where as the majority of casual star wars fans loved it. I'm a heavy reader of the expanded universe so I consider myself the a Star Wars nerd! The more I think about it, the more I disliked TLJ, and even struggling to go back and re-watch the original trilogy because of TLJ!!
Is this like the Star Wars version of casually putting down OOT fans?
I grew up reading the expanded universe. I was teased and bullied to the point of being beaten in school because I was the "Star Wars" kid. So I dunno, I would consider myself somewhat a serious fan, if we're gonna put labels on it. Not that I believe that is necessary. If you like Star Wars, you're a fan and every opinion is valid, "casual" or "hardcore".
I look forward to seeing the thoughts of any of those that liked it like me, and to see if they got what I got out of it - Star Wars finally grew up.
Not to say I don't mind the differing opinions, which is inevitable with Star Wars. Just hope those thinking about seeing it give it a shot still, and don't let this stuff derail you, as I think there is a fair amount to like in it myself.
As a Star Wars fan, i would say TLJ ruined the good work that went into TFA. Which is sad.
I liked TFA, but if you're saying this ruined "good work" put into that then you might as well just ask for a beat for beat remake of Empire (and you could argue TLJ had some similar tropes, but it certainly branched off a lot more into new territory finally I feel).
