Saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Some excellent moments and the film probably rewards prior knowledge of Hollywood at that time but my oh my - a near 3 hour movie and yet I felt hellishly little actually happened. Stylish but lacking so much substance.
By contrast I FINALLY got round to seeing Dunkirk on Amazon Prime and oh my god, I was floored. The intensity is just unbelievable and that malign and dark score by Zimmer only adds to the suspense, dread and horror of the unfolding events. For Nolan to weave three perspectives into one and make it work was just incredible. An amazing depiction of a horrifying yet remarkable piece of history. It's the sense of hopelessness that is palpable most of all - a seemingly unstoppable Nazi onslaught that is rarely visible (which only makes it scarier) all the while displaying the bravery of the men and women involved, something that never strays into the sort of demeaning flag waving that so many war films do (especially American ones). You really get a sense of what many must have thought was happening - the fear of a total Nazi wipeout that would eventually sweep Britain.
Maybe the best war film I've ever seen. A masterpiece and one that I think I will go back to time and time again.
