Liverpool FC defender Daniel Agger to make injury comeback

DANIEL AGGER is set to make his comeback from injury next week.

The 24-year-old Liverpool defender has missed the start of the Premier League season after undergoing back surgery last month.

However, he has made good progress and is closing in on a return to action.

Today’s Premier League clash with Hull at Anfield will come too soon for the Dane but he could pull on a red shirt on Tuesday night – either in the Champions League clash away to Fiorentina or for the reserves at Manchester City.

Boss Rafa Benitez said: “Daniel is training really well and improving.

“He has a specific programme with weights to strengthen his back. He is doing well and progressing but the main thing for him now is match fitness.

“We have to be careful with him and we have been talking with the doctor and the fitness coach Paco (De Miguel).

“We are hoping he could be back playing next week. When and where we still have to decide but we have the match against Fiorentina and also the reserves game on the same night.

“It will be very positive to have Daniel back.”

Benitez has been handed another fitness boost with the news that Alberto Aquilani has stepped up his rehabilitation following an ankle injury.

The £20million signing has started running but the manager is refusing to put a date on a possible debut.

“There has been a massive improvement and we’re really pleased with him,” Benitez said.

“Clearly he is a player with quality we are desperate to see on the pitch but we won’t push him too much and we haven’t set a target.

“He has to go one step at a time and we will see how he progresses. We knew he had the problem when he signed – but we knew we were signing a player for five years, not five weeks.”

Good news on the Agger front and positive stuff about Aquilani too.

Things are looking up.

Be good to have him back and fingers crossed he can stay fit for a while and get some decent playing time under his belt

Hopefully we'll see him on Tuesday at some point, missed him.

He'll be lining up for the reserves tomorrow night against City. This is really good news what with a big game against Chelsea and United coming up. We've been conceding silly goals as well lately so now he'll be pushing Carra and Skrtel for a starting place. I imagine he'll be on the bench this Sunday.

Finally we get to see him in action, will be looking forward to it.

I think by Rafa's comments he is indicating either Skrtel or Carra will be dropped.

Dagger set to play for reserves against city tomorrow i think, just said on SSN. So thats good news again , we need  Dan back asap.

Let's face it, both Skrts and Carra could do with a bit of healthy competition for places after the number of goals we've shipped in our opening 7 league games.

Great news. Let's hope the lad stays free from injury - I truly believe he could become the best centre-half in the world; all things being equal.

Cant wait to see him fire in long range shots,gives us a extra dimension.

If Dagger gets through OK I think Rafa may look at Skrtel and Dagger in the middle and Carra on the right, leaving GJ on the bench to come on as a more attacking option should he be needed

About time! One of my favourite players, hopefully he will stay injury free for the rest of the season.

Poor lad. He's a quality player but is cursed with injuries. Hope to see him go through that game and the rest of the season.

All I hope is Daniel has seen the back of these injuries he's had, we need him to get back to his best, he's the kind of player we need here, a footballing centre half, a goal scorer, he gives us an added dimension, with him in the team I believe we are a better team, one thing though he will have to work hard to regain his place, go for it lad and welcome back Daniel, hope it goes well against City....

Skrtel & Agger are the future, the present is Carra & Skrtel? or Agger?' so no more daft remarks on Carra playing on the right side, unless you want us to lose some games, Carra is that important...

Not sure putting Carra on the right and Dagger and Skrtel in the centre can be classified as 'daft' - I think the evidence is there in Rafa's selections in the past, right back is hardly an unknown area for Carra.

Obv when we are looking for more width and an attacking style of play we move Carra back to the centre and GJ back in on the right, with Carra playing alongside Dagger or Skrtel. We may not have the biggest squad but because of Rafa's astute buys we can now adapt our top players to make up for squad deficiencies
