I could choose a raft of scenes from Spielberg's films. The last 25 minutes of Close Encounters, Quint's monologue in Jaws , the American attack on the Japanese air base in Empire of the Sun (with a great performance by a young Christian Bale no less!) all immediately stand out. The list is endless. But the one that always live in the memory, as for many others, is the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.
The disorientation of everyone involved (including the viewer) is stunning and shocking. You're left with so many gruesome and haunting images such as the bullets streaking through the water, Captain Miller empyting the bloody water from his helmet, a soldier conscious and alert one moment and then dead in an instant as a bullet pierces his head or heart. Blood and sand being blown in all angles, bodies flopping down as they barely touch land. If ever a film or scene displayed that 'war is hell' then this was it. Incredible from all involved.
