      Reds offer Africa campaign support

Liverpool Football Club today offered its support to a campaign to get more African children into education during a visit by International Development Minister, Mike Foster, to Hilbre High School, Wirral.

Hilbre High is the first school in the area to sign up to the '1 Goal' campaign to make education for African children living in extreme poverty the lasting legacy of the 2010 World Cup which will be held in South Africa.

The school was spurred to action after building close links with a partner school in South Africa - Steenberg High School - through the Department for International Development (DFID) Global Schools Partnership programme.

During his visit Mike Foster was joined by former player and Liverpool Football Club representative, Brian Hall, to hear at first hand why pupils want more action to address the plight of 35 million African children who currently have no access to education.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said: "Football is fantastic at bringing people together from different backgrounds. It is also important to support campaigns like '1GOALl' as it will help children, in places like Africa, to further their education."

Mike Foster added: "Education offers the best route out of poverty for those living in the world's poorest countries, yet still 72 million children will wake up today without a school to go to.

"That's why I'm delighted that students at Hilbre High School and Liverpool Football Club have chosen to get behind the 1GOAL campaign, helping to give children across the world a brighter future."

Also present at the visit were eight volunteers from DFID's youth volunteering scheme 'Platform2' which gives less advantaged young adults the opportunity to live and work amongst poor communities in developing countries.
