Sky news sources: Liverpool "Purslow" talks to Didier Deschamps

Just saw this on sky sports news...

Going to find the page now.

      Quote
Liverpool are targeting Marseille boss Didier Deschamps to take over the Anfield hotseat.

The Reds approached Marseille earlier this week about talking to the 41-year-old, who guided the club to their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years last season.

While the French outfit would not stop their manager from talking to the English giants, president Jean-Claude Dassier insists the Reds have 'no chance' of landing their man.

He told L'Equipe: "It's true, Liverpool's executive director, Christian Purslow, called me Thursday morning. He speaks French very well, is very polite.

"I was expecting his call because I had heard of Liverpool's interest in Didier. He asked me if I would allow him to meet Didier and (agent) Jean-Pierre Bernes.
      Never forbid

"I replied that I would never forbid anyone from meeting whoever.

"I also kindly indicated to him that there wasn't the slightest chance for him to pinch our coach. Even in his dreams."

Deschamps' contract runs out at the end of next season and he is yet to pen an extension, but Dassier is confident of keeping the former Marseille midfielder.

He added: "With Didier, we have a trusting relationship.

"I hope he will commit himself to us for another year. I'm not worried.

      Flattered

"It's true also that Didier is flattered to see a great European club interested in him."

France's World Cup and European Championship winning captain is regarded as one of Europe's best young managers and has made an impressive start to his coaching career since taking over the reins at Monaco in 2001.

He steered the principality side to the Coupe de la Ligue title just two years after taking his first managerial post and led them to the UEFA Champions League final the following season

He then helped Juventus to the Serie B title in his one season at the Bianconeri before taking charge at Marseille last summer and leading them to the Ligue 1 title.

Speculation has been rife over who will take charge at Anfield since Rafa Benitez left the club at the beginning of the month, with Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson previously thought to be among the frontrunners.

This could be a great appointment as he his without doubt a good manager but....... He resigned from Monaco because he fell out with the President and he resigned from Juventus because he fell out with the board. How long will he last if appointed?

TIming is bit suspect. Makes me think Purslow was waiting for Rafa to have a go at him in the press and then
released this positive story straight after. These sorts live on spin and PR. I think Hodgson is who he wants.
No problems with Hodgson taking it to the streets.

Headlines a tad miss leading...should be seek's talks with Deschamps as he has not actually spoken to him.

What I don't understand through all of this is why it has taken the best part of a month to try and speak with prospective coaches. How long does it take to create a shortlist and make contact.

As it stands we have less than a month before our first game and the urgency to find a new coach is F***ing laughable. If Purslow needs a definition of urgency then I will urgently drive down to Anfield and kick him in his slimy tw*t.

In saying that, at least Deshamps is a decent manager and altough it doesn't fill me with great excitement I would probably prefer a young well respected manager than Woy of the Wovers.

These are his achievements as manager.

      Monaco

          * 1 × French League Cup: 2002–03
          * 1 × UEFA Champions League Finalist: 2003–04

      Juventus

          * 1 × Serie B: 2006–07

      Marseille

          * 1 × French Ligue 1: 2009–10
          * 1 × French League Cup: 2009–10

Not to sure what he would be like as Liverpool manager, but i'd take him before Hogson though!!

Agreed not sure i want him as manager. People have ago at Hodgeson, but if King Kenny is not getting considered then for me he's the next best thing, because he knows the premier league, he knows our history and he is obviously used to working on a budget and getting the best out of the players he's got at his disposel.

Jaysus Res you must have heard of him he was captain of the French 98 world cup winning team, Cantona called him the hod carrier.

In relation to this have to say I'm a bit shocked I thought Hodgson was a shoe in for the job and I'm also disturbed why is Purslow only approaching lads over 3 weeks after Rafa is gone.

They should already have had a man in place, this is becoming a debacle. Very Embarrasing for the club and shows me purslow was so intent on getting rid of Rafa he didn't give a sh*t who came in.

Is there an end in sight or is this clown Purslow going to drag it out all over the Summer.

What type of football do Deschamp's teams play ? Liverpool have played functional football under the last two managers and it hasn't got me on the edge of my seat. While I'm wary of referring to the Evans era due to the poor discipline & lack of focus,I loved the way Roy's team played and would love to see it return though with defence stronger of course.

Not too sure, but I think with Marseille he played a direct 4-3-3 system.

Don't think this is gonna happen. Deschamps has told a local Marseille paper that a manager should be with a club for a long-term commitment and that he's having talks with Marseille about extending his contract.

I'm old enough to remember the days when LFC did its business in such a professional, efficient way that the first anyone knew of a signing was when he was presented to the media at Anfield.

Problem now is, whoever gets the job will be seen as second-choice (at best). It was probably in Marseille's interest to leak the Liverpool interest to show they held on to their man.  I don't see any upside for Purslow in feeding the story to L'Equipe - he ends up with egg on his face for having made a failed bid (always assuming that DD stays in France).

From what I've read, Deschamps is an iron disciplinarian who had distant relations with his players.  Made them champions for the first time since 1992, mind you.

Could happen this with Broughton's Chelsea connections.

To break the monopoly of Lyon in France takes some doing, so he must have something about him. Was always a good little player and one of the most complete players the world has seen.

Wouldn't exactly be overjoyed about having an ex-Chelsea man managing our club, but it's not the worst option we've had.

If this is true then its an even worse situation that I feared.

The way a club appointment a manager is draw up a shortlist, interview them, pick the best candidate and give them the job.

The fact that over 3 weeks into this task they are still approaching new people says it all about the state of the club at the moment.

I think the most logical reason is that they told the senior players possibly that Hodgson was the preferred choice and they were less than impressed with it so they've had to rethink it to stop a mass exodus as opposed to a few players leaving.

How do you know Hodgson hasn't turned us down, who would want to leave a place where he is loved to a club in limboland, no money for players, no date on these two dicks selling so why would he want to come here.

Hello Mr Purslime you are a penis, I know you know many languages but I'd like to put it in plain english. You are a cock!

PS Please F**k off and bring the wankers with you!

Deschamps wouldn't be compatible with our current squad I don't think.

FFS dont come this no money for players bollocks thats getting so fecking irritating, since these owners in charge they have bought Torres Masch Johnson Aqualini etc not exactly evertons or fulhams budget is it.

And how was that money raised? Because only one season since the vipers have taken us over, has our transfer budget exceeded our transfer sales.  People like to say Wenger has had no money, but very few will tell you that he's been able to re-invest more than Rafa's total net spend from the sale of just 4 players.  We had an average budget of £20m a season in the 3-4 seasons before the yanks turned up, now it's been £4-5 and they have lumbered a huge debt on us.  People who wanted Rafa out before the pair of cu*ts sucking the life out of OUR club, have their priorities the wrong way around.

Who was sacrificed to bring in Mascherano ?

Who was sacrificed to bring in Torres ?

No its not Fulhams or Evertons budget as Fulham & Everton have outspent us in terms of Net Spending in the previous two years.

The purchase price for Torres Mach Aqual and Johnson was roughly 80 million give or take

      http://www.lfcreds.com/reds/index.php?topic=25582.0

Add to the 09/10 the sales of Voronin and Dossena. around 7 million transfer profit we made this season.

Rafa average yearly net spend around 12 million.

thats around 6 million per transfer window average.

No but logic states if you discussing the new manager of the club he is going to be compared to past managers including rafa its a no brainer. Maybe the fact it decends into an argument maybe due to the managers faults rather than the posters and i am referring to Houllier and Rafa and souness as the rest of the managers are without criticism and i include uncle Roy in that. The three horseman of the Apocalypse as i refer to them deserve all the criticism they get.

Calling Rafa one of the horseman of the apocolypse is ignorant. I'll say it again. IGNORANT. He built us up back into a powerhouse before he had the rug ripped out from under him.

If you think it's that personal, then well boo hoo to you. It's fact. You can't honestly call Rafa that and think you are the one thinking straight.

As for the rest? I am an overseas supporter, but as one of many overseas supporters on here im damn well sure they will join me in saying that someone who speaks like that, is F***ing sad. I said you were ignorant for saying Rafa is a horseman of the apocolapyse. Not that personal, simply stating that it is quite ignorant to think he was that bad. I stand by it.

But you decided to insult my position as a supporter, and as a person by calling me a geek. Whatever. I quite happily admit i enjoy computers, computer games etc, but that doesn't make me a geek. Hell, maybe i have geek-ish qualities. But is that bad? I enjoy computers, so F***ing what. I doubt there's many people that don't enjoy a good video game or a humorous picture.

Things i also enjoy are drinking, hanging with mates, going to games, going clubbing, beach, music etc etc. Also, my beautiful girlfriend.

Oh, and here's a photo showing how F***ing close ive been to the Kop mate.

Don't think that being a game-goer makes you any better. There's a lot more to being a red than that, IMO.

Some will fight, some will hide away until it's over. The collective "we" won't be fighting though because not every fan of our club feels the way that you and I do Roy. Some of our fans are happy to just continue to do nothing but talk about it. Others aren't even aware there's a fight going on.

In past years it was different because people, society and life generally was different especially in our city. People were used to fighting, not in the violent sense of the word. They were used to adversity, depression and the only way to get things was to take it or fight for it. Now, in 2010, people are too used to having things handed to them on a plate - even in Liverpool. Compared to other people, we still struggle but generally it's all there and done for us. Fighting the good fight is not something that is embedded into Scousers anymore. Hopefully though, we will have enough like minded people there with us prepared to fly our flag an fight our cause.

      Lock?

      http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_6232344,00.html

Liverpool's interest in Didier Deschamps appears to have been completely quashed after the Marseille manager announced that he was happy at the Stade Velodrome.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson had looked most likely to take over before Marseille's title-winning coach Deschamps emerged as a strong contender.

However, the World Cup-winning Frenchman has now rejected any chance of joining Liverpool, revealing he is "in discussions" about a contract extension with Marseille.

He explained: "I am happy at Marseille. I am not there for just one year. A coach must be there for the long haul, and that is my wish."

The French club's president has also dismissed the chances of Deschamps, who also led Monaco to the 2004 UEFA Champions League final, taking over at Anfield.

It was reported in L'Equipe that Liverpool chief-executive Christian Purslow contacted Marseille and asked to speak to Deschamps, a request which was turned down by Jean-Claude Dassier.

Dassier claimed: "He asked me if I allowed him to meet Didier and Jean-Pierre Bernes (Deschamps' agent).

"I replied that I did not allow any meeting to take place. I have also indicated that there is no way we'll let go of our coach."

Its a debacle because noone wants the job while those two fcuking idiots are in charge of the club. Deschamps has already stated that he wouldnt take on the job while they are in charge and has turned down purslow. Hodgson I think has also had 2nd thoughts because of the political situation withon the club this is why he hasnt taken the job. The board cannot promise any money for transfers which is what  new manager would want to do straight away. Any pro manager of any calibre will not want this job its that simple and this is why the whole thing is being dragged out. Until new owners are in place (which doesnt seem likely at the moment) I think we are gonna struggle to find a manager of any calibre.

When i spoke before hand, i was so angry when i heard the news but now i have had time to calm down, i will give a balanced assessment. Deschamps is not a great manager. But, he did do well with an average Monaco team in the European Cup. Also, he did well to break the Lyon dominance in France last season. However, i think that dominance was broken as much by the poor performances of Lyon and not the quality of Marseille. Anyway, thats all i have got on the positive side of things. Now, he is an ex-Chelski player. I have no problem with that but i never liked him at Chelski. He was an arrogant pr**k. Also, i don't think he is a great manager....just been a bit lucky at times i.e. picking up a Marseille team when it appeared Lyon were getting weaker.

Thankfully, it does look, however, like this rumour has been quashed and it was just that...A RUMOUR!! I suppose we have got to get used to this sh*te. We have all had an interesting day-trip, now for the next manager to debate....

      What he said.
