Liverpool plot shock move
for Aston Villa star

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson wants Aston Villa midfield general Stiliyan Petrov as the shock replacement for transfer-seeking Javier Mascherano.

Hodgson admires the Bulgarian star's style and is ready to pay around £7 million for him as he looks to cash in on Argentinian Mascherano by selling him to Inter Milan coach Rafa Benitez.

The Kop are looking to land both Petrov and right back Luke Young in a surprise double raid as they try to bring in seasons professionals for a demanding campaign.

Petrov, 30, is one of the Premier League's most respect operators and a key man for Martin O'Neill who brought him to Villa from Celtic where he was also a legend.
 
The Bulgarian star is aware of the Liverpool interest and could be keen on a move to Anfield - although Villa are desperate to keep their squad together despite so many being wanted men.

Hodgson wants a proven midfield schemer to play an anchor role in the Liverpool side. He expects Mascherano to move on, which would leave just Brazilian Lucas Leiva for that position - with Xabi Alonso never properly replaced.

Petrov may not seem the most charismatic capture, but he is in the right mould for Hodgson who plans to put his own well-drilled imprint on the Anfield side this season and beyond.

He actually had a decent season last year and was instrumental to what Villa achieved.

Definitely a better footballer then Lucas in my eyes.

I can't bring myself to believe this story, if i'm being honest. Surely to F**k Roy's scouting system extends further than some bloke going to Villa's over 30's games?

Petrov is a very good technical player who passes the ball well and is always available to support a colleague. More like Alonso than Masch, in my opinion.

He is a good player and has being a good servant to both Celtic and Villa but he's 30 now and teams like Liverpool don't sign 30 year olds. Its The Fulham's of this world that would be doing that. I know Gary Mac was getting on when we signed him but he was a one off and a masterclass for us. But we haven't done it since.

Midfielders who mainly stay behind the ball don't need great pace, so age is less of an issue, as Gary Mac proved.  The position requires anticipation and intelligence, and Petrov has both.

In his favour also is the fact that he has proved himself an effective performer in the Premiership, so he'd be ready to roll from day one.

Just what I was thinking!!

Please do not throw dust in our eyes with such "transfers"! If you plan to sell the team and collect the money just do so and let the youngsters play. Petrov is not good enough for Liverpool!
