Manchester United linked with Liverpool's Fernando Torres

The Red Devils are considering replacing Wayne Rooney with Fernando Torres, according to reports in the Daily Star.

The Daily Star suggest that Wayne Rooney would command a fee of €85 million transfer fee, an extremely high figure considering he has only a year and a half to run on his contract, has expressed an interest to leave and could possibly buy out his own contract for €6 million next summer.

If United were to receive that amount, however, it would more than justify spending €56 million on Torres.

It would be an extremely controversial signing as no player has been transferred directly from Liverpool to Manchester United since Allenby Chilton in 1938.

The last player to move from Manchester United to Liverpool was Phil Chisnall in 1964.

A source supposedly close to Fernando Torres told the Star, “On the face of it spending all that money on one player is something United would find hard to give the green light to.

“But they know Torres would sell shirts all over the world. It’s no secret that Alex Ferguson wants Torres at United.”

While I for one find it about as likely him going to United as Rooney coming to us, there is an interesting point behind all this.

Player power has been a new imposter at Anfield in recent years.  Alonso and Mascherano's actions are practically unheard of in Liverpool's history.

But from what I heard about NESV they are firmly in the no-nonsense camp.  That a player signs a contract and that the club decide when a player leaves.  If so, then I think it would be a strong statement from NESV to issue a warning that Liverpool are no longer a selling club.

Unless of course Torres does carry on playing like sh*t and then Utd can quite happily give us £100M for us to rebuild a brand new team.

I have read the Star's article (on line) and it would seem they (if this is true) want him to SELL SHIRTS to ease the debt. They have also linked him to Barca, who are over €500 in debt them selves.

Was listening to the radio late last night and a man u fan was on there speculating about Rooney. He said the next year or so will be as testing for them as this year has been for us.

Rooney is jumping ship. He is unhappy that the club aren't investing any more and that Ronaldo was sold off.

Looking around him scholes, giggs, Brown, Ferdinand and van der sar are all on the wrong side of 30. Berbatov, Ji-sung, Evra and Carrick turning 30 next year.....
