Aston Villa are ready to rival Liverpool in a bid for Preston defender Sean St Ledger.

Villa scouts have watched the Republic of Ireland international regularly while Liverpool assistant boss Sammy Lee has also run the rule over the 25-year-old.

St Ledger has recaptured his form and fitness after a difficult past 18 months where he saw a move to Middlesbrough collapse and tentative inquiries from Celtic come to nothing.

However, Preston are struggling to shed their debts and will be willing to listen to offers in January with an asking price of around £4million.

Villa manager Gerard Houllier knows he has an advantage over his former club Liverpool as St Ledger is a Villa fan and has partnered Richard Dunne at international level.
Houllier said: 'If we spot a good international player who can add something, we'll take him. We will have one or two coming in January.'

Meanwhile, Villa central defender Curtis Davies, 25, currently on loan at Leicester, is emerging as a January target for Celtic.

See him regular with Ireland. Hes not bad but no hes not needed. Hes not in Aggers class. No better then Skrtel. And Kelly and Wilson will be better when given chances to prove it.

Come on for F**k sake, I've seen him a number of times for Ireland as average a centre half as there is. I don't rate him and think he would be awful signing.

I remember this lad on a documentary about Peterborough with Ron Atkinson.

He was one of their best young players but to be honest although he is a decent player we have better players already at the club and CB is not a priority at the minute in my opinion.

Agree. All of the CB at the club are better than him so would be wasted money on a player we don't need.

Let him go to Villa, he'll shine at Villa. He's decent enough but as has been said, we've better CB's already.

They are mistaken, I think we going to run Poulsen in the St. Ledger, he certainly plays like a frakkin horse! There is the added benefit that if he falls, they'll shoot him.

What have we become? Being linked with players from lower leagues. He's a decent player but we have Agger, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos and Carragher.

We have enough qualities in CB and actually in the defence on a whole evne though Johnson and Konchesky can be liabilities. We need to strenghten the other areas. We especially need wingers for both wide areas, an out and out playmaker and a decent back up to Torres.
