Bizarrely as odd as it might seem the only way to explain the expansion of the universe relative to gravity is by a flat universe.
But of course as I stated earlier only a tiny amount of the universe can be accounted for at the moment without dark energy and matter.
It's not really, simply because we don't actually fully understand gravity.
When boffins look at the four fundamental forces of gravitation, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear, and the strong nuclear. gravity does not behave as theory says it should.
It should be much stronger, which is one reason why we have Brane Theory.
There are many models for the shape of the universe, but none of them really describe a flat structure as we understand it.
My favourite is that the Universe is saddle shaped, but regardless, expansion is not necessarily uniform, but given our current knowledge it is almost certainly not flat.

Also according to rib, Henderson more properly belongs in Flatland, a 2 dimensional universe most commonly viewed as a cartoon.
