MANCHESTER UNITED look set to have their ticket allocation slashed by more than a third for Octoberâs Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.
Action is being proposed on safety grounds due to United fans persistently standing in the gangways of the Lower Anfield Road Stand when the sides met back in March.
A report by the Ground Safety Advisory Group has recommended that Liverpool City Council approve a reduction in the away endâs capacity for the fixture from 3,015 to 1,965.
The councilâs licensing committee will debate the issue at a special meeting on August 8 but itâs likely to be approved.
âIn spite of the professional efforts of the stewards the gangways could not be kept fully clear throughout the game,â said the report.
âPictures were presented which showed how the gangways at that game were affected compared to a similar high-profile game where persistent standing also occurred.
âThe actions of the Manchester United supporters had overwhelmed the reasonable operations of the stewards through the management plan. This is an escalation of the actions of the supporters from previous games.
âIt is not clear what more the club can reasonably do through stewarding measures to ensure spectators do not encroach in to gangways.
âSpectators from other away clubs attending the ground also persistently stand. However they do not spread out into the gangways to the same extent that the Manchester United spectators do.
âThe issue of standing in gangways by Manchester United supporters had now reached a level that the clubâs safety management plan is unable to address. The time has now come for the local authority to consider what action it should take.â
The move to reduce Unitedâs ticket allocation for the game at Anfield on October 15 is a council issue and has nothing to do with the club.
Liverpool will be duty bound to carry out whatever is decided when the licensing committee make a final decision on the proposal on August 8.
