If you can root through the Dowler families dirty washing when they have just had a child murdered, then attempting to get any one of News Internationals publications to "come clean" on any issue is near to impossible, especially when the "issue" is twenty odd years old and your "proprietor" is way above the law!
Personally, I'd forget the petition. I am resolved not to give that organisation another a penny from my pocket. So much so that I've cancelled my Sky subscription some time ago and had purchased the Sunday Times for the last 30 years and thats gone too.
Nevertheless I've signed the petition, and I hope it assists.
