The deal for Queen’s Park Rangers striker Loic Remy to make a £8 million move to Liverpool is off after the French striker failed his medical this week. The Independent report that the medical staff at Anfield asked for a second opinion before making their decision, but this is not the first time this has happened to the former Newcastle United striker.
When Remy was making a move from OGC Nice to Marseille in 2010, the striker failed the initial medical due to a heart defect that was discovered during the tests.
The Marseille medical staff then had further tests done on the player by their own Doctors and club doctor Christophe Baudot said that heart specialists consulted by the club were of the opinion that Remy was fit for practicing sport at a high level.
"I am relieved to know the outcome," Remy said at the time. "It will allow me to work with Marseille in good condition with a free mind.
"When you go through such moments, you don't feel calm. But I'd rather have it happen that way and really know today that I'm healthy."
Four years have passed since the defect was originally discovered and the forward has never missed a game due to anything linked with his condition.
In his first season with Marseille he scored 15 goals in 31 games, following that up with 12 goals in 29 games. It would be strange that after his half-season with QPR and then the very successful loan spell with Newcastle United, that Liverpool would feel that the defect would have any further effect on his career.
The only other possible explanation could be a slight knee niggle that he had trouble with at the end of the 2011/12 season, and was exasperated when Marseille continued to rush the player back from injury.
Remy only managed 420 minutes in 14 games in his last season for Marseille. However, it was more due to the club rushing him back than any long-term damaged. His performances in Premier League since that injury have shown just how effective he can be in the English league.

For Liverpool to have cancelled the deal due to a known and well documented condition affecting his heart would be very strange. If it hasn’t given the player any problems in four years, it is unlikely it would be a problem in the future.
Whoever Remy signs for, they can look forward to the French forward having something to prove when he next visits Anfield in the Premier League.
