You can't have a 4th choice for defence as good as Lovren is, who would start in almost every team from outside top 6. It's an aberration which doesn't happen at any team.
United must have about 6 in fairness.
Dont get me wrong it's important to phase out under performing players, and Lovren was a bit erratic to say the least at times, but you dont do it at the expense of the hear and now.
Sell him by all means but make sure your team has sufficient depth to cover it.
Yes we can make do by putting Fabinho back there, but again that takes away from our midfield. I think 4 first team central defenders is about right considering we use 2 a game. That's cover for both positions. 3 into 2 spots for a season which if all going well we will play more matches than any other team, that's not right no matter who the manager is.
Originally under Klopp it was Klavan, for Rafa we had Kgyriakos, for Rodgers it was Kolo. You do need that 4th choice who has experience when called upon to fill the gap until the main defenders are back healthy.
Also add into that we are short at left back and right back, theres not a lot beyond Origi and the front 3 up top either.
I think we can all agree that we are operating now with a smaller squad than last season and any further transfers out of the senior squad would be a step too far. I'm really not sure why we keep taking the risk when we know Matip and Gomez have their injury issues, and VVD cant be expected to play them all.
Perhaps the idea is to get through to January and spend a few million on a 4th choice centre back that is on lower wages than Dejan? I guess this was the last chance the club would have to get decent money for him.
