Think that one through. We couldn’t get any offers for him with an upcoming expiring contract so we’re going to offer him a new, lucrative one so we can recoup money for him?
Don’t need to think anything through, it’s hardly rocket science to understand. Because it makes him seem more valuable to us. A year ago teams knew they could wait a year and take him for free. Something that looks like is going to be the case with Timo Werner, was the case with Emre Can and is now the case with Rabiot. All have/were offered new contracts and all were rejected yet there were/are no bids from anyone in the final year.
Its no different to the likes of Suarez and Coutinho signing new contracts 6 months before they left us, means we can gain as much as possible.
Frankfurt activated a clause to make Luka Jovic’ loan move permanent despite knowing it was all but certain he was going to Madrid, they had him as their player for a month or so and then got £60mill for him.
To an extent it’s all just a game, either a club, a player or an agent will play it to maximise their own gain. Perhaps something for you to think about.
