Steven Gerrard on sporting director Gerard Houllier's hit list for New York Red Bulls
New York Red Bulls are targeting Steven Gerrard as their star signing should he fail to agree a new deal to stay at Liverpool.

The ambitious Major League Soccer club have included Gerrard on their ‘discovery list’ – a list of future, possible acquisitions – and are hoping to take advantage of the 34-year-old midfielder’s strong relationship with their sporting director Gérard Houllier.

The inclusion on the ‘discovery list’ already means that should Gerrard leave Liverpool and want to play in the United States then the Red Bulls would have first call on him ahead of other American clubs.

Gerrard’s deal at Anfield runs out at the end of this season and although an offer to him has finally been made the Liverpool captain is considering his options and contemplating whether this will be his last season with the club.

Gerrard, who will be expected to lead Liverpool out on Sunday against Manchester United at Old Trafford, has no intention of retiring and nor will be play for another Premier League side.

It means that should he leave then he will look for a club in Europe involved in Champions League football – and should receive offers – or may even be lured by the prospect of moving to America for a couple of years.

New York would be the ideal destination if he chooses to do that – Gerrard was impressed when Liverpool travelled and played there during a pre-season tour – and the Red Bulls are keen to make a strong statement with Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill, their two foreign stars, set to leave.

Given the push being made by New York City, the new club set up by Manchester City’s owners, who have signed up Frank Lampard and David Villa, then the Red Bulls know they must respond. Given their option they know they could stop any attempt by New York City to sign Gerrard.

Houllier was Liverpool’s manager for six years between 1998-2004 and awarded Gerrard the club’s captaincy when the player was just 22. The Frenchman has maintained a friendship with Gerrard and attended his testimonial at Anfield last year.

Houllier is Red Bulls’ international sporting director for football, which also takes in responsibility for Salzburg and Leipzig, and would want to attract Gerrard to New York should be leave Liverpool.

Although, under MLS rules, a club does not need the agreement of the player to include them on the list, the club does have to be genuine and bona fide in its interest. At the same time it is unusual to include such a high-profile player as Gerrard, who is yet to decide his future and has not given any indication he wants to join them.

In theory Gerrard could sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January but that is unlikely to happen. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has stated his desire to keep Gerrard and a contract extension offer is now on the table although there has been some surprise as to how long it has taken. It still appears inconceivable that Gerrard could leave but it does also appear that he has a serious decision to make.

Gerrard, who retired from international football after the World Cup to concentrate on his club career, is considering the offer but the bigger question for him is the role he will play for Liverpool if he stays.

Feels really weird to start this thread today. Not sure how much is in it, especially the part mentioned in bold. MLS rules are really weird, so being on the "discovery list" doesn't mean anything.

I personally don't see much in this at all. But if there's anything that could even make this halfway plausible, it's the Houllier connection.

If I was Stevie I would go.

He's been at Liverpool all his life and its not as though we are going to win anything anytime soon. He should be enjoying his last couple of years as a footballer to be honest. An absolute servant for the club but time to try something new rather than get sodden down in the mess we find ourselves in yet again!

Honestly, I think he will leave for the US - I wouldn't even blame him.

Is it just me or would most Liverpool fans actually be happy for him nowadays?

I think Gerrard has earned the right to choose himself what he wants to do, whether that be MLS or staying at Anfield, he's not the player he was, age does that to you, but he's gave us his best years when he could have probably had his choice of any club in the world at one point.

I remember Ian Callaghan getting stick towards the end of his time.It was just the fact he had been there so long people thought they had a right to have a pop.
the way Anfield is at present I would suggest it would be better for him to go and enjoy his last couple of years in football in the MLS because he doesn't look happy at all at present and his last couple of years should be enjoyable. He has earned the right to be respected if the crowd turn on him it would be a terrible thing to witness

I agree mate. Stevie doesn't seem happy or as enthusiastic as he used to. I think missing out on the title last year combined with how poor we've been this season has made him realize he's unlikely to ever get that league winners' medal. It's sad. If anyone deserves it, it's Gerrard.

If he does go then lets bring in a replacement before allowing him to leave. Will support him whatever he decides is best for him and his family. Most certainly won't find me slagging him off if he does decide that he wants a new challenge elsewhere. With Thierry Henry recently retiring it makes sense for the NY Red Bulls to be looking for a new marquee player.

Indeed. They're pretty much dumping Tim Cahill as well, plus the newly formed New York City (same ownership as Manchester City) will have David Villa and Frank Lampard on their squad.

If the MLS season starts in March do you think they may want him to start the season with them?

In which case do you think we would sell if he had decided he wanted to leave or would he just plod through as captain till May?

I think if he wanted to go, we'd give him a free transfer and probably pay his wages until May.

Absolutely, whatever he decides should be respected - he's earned that from every LFC fan. But I'd love him to stay and finish his career with us.

Same. Personally, if he wants to stay, I'd give him a 2 year contract, 100k a week :D

He is an old war horse who has seen it all and I think he looks a this team and thinks he cannot drag another team along with him again. But if we got a couple of good signings in and Daniel healthy again I think he would improve his form

Wish Stevie well, whatever he decides to do career wise. It does not need saying but he has been a great servant to the club. Only regret it seems he will never lift the Premier League trophy, that he really deserved.

If only some of what's leaked from the club today is true no wonder Steven looks dejected of late, we pushed so close last year, he probably felt he had one hand on that one trophy he craved.. With all the apparent mess behind the scenes and his comments regarding the transfer policy in recent months he probably feels dejected like we do.

Reports of a couple of fallings out with Lovren, probably frustrated at how sh*te he has been and that we have wasted a golden opportunity to really push on.

All this talk of low balling and the committee and financial people trying to bring down the offers on contracts etc, maybe he has been offered a deal he finds to be insulting (we don't know) because I'd have thought he would expect a pay decrease in this deal and he would sign, but maybe it's very low (in comparison) and only a year and he feels put out to add to his other frustrations.

I think he may well go, he'd have signed by now if it had been on the table and all was happy.. Sad way to bring down his career from a personal point of view I'd think
