If a youngster has exceptional talent, he'll likely only need one or two years out on loan (if any) before consistently breaking into a first team squad like Liverpool's before the age of 21. The reality is, many of our youngsters are good, but they're just not exceptional enough to make the grade.
Continuing to send them out on loan is not a waste though. It allows Championship and lower PL sides to see their potential value to them, one that meets our valuation, allowing us to then recover some of our academy costs. And there is always a genuine chance a late bloomer is uncovered.
At the moment, I only see Ben Woodburn, Rhian Brewster, and Curtis Jones as the ones who may break through in the foreseeable future. Wilson will probably need to have a great year to not find himself sold off to fund other transfers in the next year or two.
But if there was a Pulisic or Bailey coming through our ranks, I have little doubt they wouldn't be constantly loaned out to develop. We just don't have that talent, in my opinion.
