Though a friendly, It's sad we lost. This game mattered just like the Barca game. It shows we still have a huge room for improvement.

A bigger concern is the spate of injuries... It looks like the list may get longer if we train/play the high intensity football week in, week out. I just hope not... I wish we have a creative midfielder that can naturally dictate play, that'll give us another playing style if need exist to conserve energy and still win games against strong & less creative oppositions.

Not really mate I didnt watch either match, I watched the cricket.

I think I'd rather watch us get beat 4-0 every game than watch a game of cricket...

Meh.... when yesterday's lineup was announced we all knew that was going to be the last warm up for the season.  Today's game was nothing more than a formality and an obligation.  We had to put a few first team players out to appease the fans who paid to attend, but the reality is that our primary objective was to finish the game with no injuries.

Performance meant nothing, result even less.

As for the usual suspects and their relentless bitching and moaning -- there is a reason the mods created an "ignore" feature ;)

I am in my early, very early, sixties. I grew up with Shanks, met and talked to him many times, when as a school girl we would go to Melwood, then bus it back to Anfield to wait for them coming out after their lunch.
Did this every holiday. Shanks would not condone any player, pulling on the shirt, not giving his all. Any defeat hurt, friendly, kick about, tiddlywinks, that is what I grew up with. Any defeat hurts, I want my team to win every match we play.
So, things have changed, we can now be fine with a defeat, 'cos it's only a friendly. Shanks would not be happy with that.

That was my universe  too  .....  loved to get over to Melwood with my mates.

No security . Could stand pitchside and talk to the players.  They were all on £40 a week. Shanks believed in the collective .

Given the way this thread has gone, this season could be a f**king nightmare around here.

I wasn't even in here and my tart alarm was going off big style.

      Have some f**king self respect.

...  and Princess hasn't even rocked up yet.   Its been too quiet.

I don't think so, there wasn't 1 moment of positivity in that game....not 1 shot on goal.

People can use the circumstances as an excuse which is fine, an other day with our best team and more time we give a better go but you can't defend an embarrassing shambles which it was for the full 90 mins.

It's probably shown us that some of the players there aren't good enough for the club,
but mostly it's shown us why you should play two games in two days.

And at least we signed a goalkeeper out of it

Such a different world now, sadly. I was at Anfield waiting for the players to come out when Tony Hateley arrived in the car park in his white Jaguar! We all rushed over and he struggled to get out of his car, as we all surrounded it!
He seemed very exotic to us, I don't think any of the other players had a car quite as flashy, and he was really handsome.
There was a real connection then, between fans and players which is impossible these days, due to the security.

Loss to be expected, 1 game too far.

Still only a friendly though, and lots of youngsters getting games.

Hee hee - Tommy Docherty (who sold Hateley to us) said to Shanks "You've got to admit he was good in the air" - Shanks replied: "Aye... so was Douglas Bader and he had a wooden leg." but I prefer the other Hateley story...

Tony got a head injury and the trainer told Shanks "He doesn’t know who he is..." – to which Shanks replied: "Tell him he’s Pele."  :lmao:

When are we opening a pre match Arsenal thread? Think it's about the right time now.

Word is they are seriously struggling for a fit centre back to face us.

I've wiped this one from memory! Didn't we spanked by Mainz in a friendly under Rafa a few years back? 4 or 5 nil if I remember. Suggest we don't play them again.

I have no problem with us playing them again but maybe not the day after playing Barca and then fielding a team that was always going to struggle.

In a way, it would have been more dangerous for us to go into the Arsenal game thinking we're world beaters because we made Barcelona look crap.
We just didn't have to be super competitive, with the risk of injury and nothing at stake, gave their supporters a bit of joy in the process. No biggie, I'd rather Klopp saw frailties in a meaningless training session than the league.
