Think it was Rio Ferdinand who was saying Virgil doesn't deserve the UEFA award or Balon d'Or because the numbers Messi and Ronaldo hit during a season. Well, why does that rule apply for forwards but not defenders? Messi may well get over 50 goals in a season but how is that any more impressive than a defender going an entire season without being dribbled past, a high number of clean sheets and chipping in with the odd goal. Virgil wont get over 50 goals but Messi wouldn't go 50 games without being dribbled past.
Also, there was the year Ribery hit a ridiculous number of goals and assists, hitting the numbers Rio is banging on about for Messi and Ronaldo but did he win it? No.
Suarez got more goals than Messi a few years ago and did he win it? No.
Salah hit 44 goals and a load of assists and did he win it? No.
Trouble with people like Rio is that they are blinkered by their favorites and by a profile rather than looking at who actually deserves to win it.
The last few years it's been a complete joke with Modric winning it and Ronaldo winning it for being a cheerleader in the final of the Euro's. This year though, the player who is actually deserving the awards is finally getting the recognition.
